Out of all Chopin's Etudes, I like this one the most because of its enormous emotional depth. Until now it was purely intuitive but learning about Norma and Chopin's identification with the libretto, I understand why. Will try to play faster, although slower tempo brings to me deeper and more suspended emotion.
Big thank you Greg for your thorough and sensitive analysis.
Bardzo dziekuje Panie Grzegorzu.

This was the first Etude I ever heard by Chopin and to this day it is the one I love the most. It always seemed to me to be the most "nocturne" of the Etudes and I still listen to it with this spirit. The counterpoint of the voices always moved me greatly, and the bass notes remind me of the seven-string guitars in the Brazilian "Choro" genre. Something of the sadness of our "Serestas", or as Villa-Lobos could say, "Seresteiras Impressions". How beautiful. At the time it seemed to me to have something to do with Bach, more specifically the Fugue from Prelude & Fugue No. 8 in E-Flat Minor, BWV 853, WTC I. Thank you very much for your precious analyses, for sharing your very revealing impressions, knowledge and love of music with us; I have recommended them to my pianist friends.

I knew about the betrayal he felt when Maria Wodzińska rejected him because they were engaged at one point. But I did not know he also felt betrayed when Konstancja got married in 1832. Poor Chopin was not happy in his love life! There were so many women who wanted to be with him, but the ones he loved he could not be with.

Greg, I can't thank you enough for this video and all your videos in general. The knowledge that you're giving out for free, the way you present it, your performance, and your vulnerability... all of it leaves me in awe and I'm very very grateful to have stumbled upon this channel. You're a great inspiration. Thank you!

I still remember when I noticed similarities in Chopin's music and belcanto operas for the first time. It was the very first phrase of Nocturne Op.32 No.1 that somehow reminded me of "Potria novel vigore" part/phrase of Amina's aria "Ah, non credea mirarti" (La Sonnambula, Bellini) that I was learning at that time. I don't know, whether this very similarity has some real ground, but it was a reason I got deeper into Chopin's fascination with belcanto music, because the only example I knew before was his reference to La Gazza Ladra.
Thank you ever so much for all your videos!!! ❤👏🏻💐

For one moment the ending gave me the impression that it would be in major... but one bar later that impression shattered, and I knew this had to be Chopin :(
There's something so tragic in this piece that is almost unparalleled in all of music. Thank you for your analysis!

Thank you for uncovering these unexpected treasures in this Etude, Greg !  You delivered a deeply touching performance.  I never liked it, as slow as other pianists play it, but you revealed its true beauty. And the link with Norma…. Now I’ll always hear Callas in the background !

What bliss! Today I looked at this for the first time, I usually do a little sight reading before getting into my pieces and I noted that I had starred*** this a long time ago and when I tried to play it this morning I didnt make good sense of it and then I saw your video tonight and I was just floored. You surpass yourself every day. Thank you for this! 😭

My heart just broke. I can feel the pain of unrequited love. Appreciate your reference to JS Bach's Fugue and the Belcanto style of this etude and reference to Bellini's Norma.

Thank you for telling us the story behind the music. Love this etude which is extremely beautiful!! Full of deep sadness! How Chopin used the E flat major scale to construct the long scary virtuoso wave for left-hand was a magic!

I am very interested in your comments about this etude. It's the only one I didn't really look at. Not because I don't like it but because I feel scared about the tiny notes. Yes, one can approximately subdivide them so that they fall together with the right hand, and this way it *can* be practiced successfully. This intermediated step would just destroy the mood for the player for a while. Not a problem for the listener though, who just wants to enjoy the drama of these schemeless ghosts in the left hand or whatever you imagine that it could be. Oh, and there is another fff right smack in the middle of the score. Who said btw Chopin never wrote fff?

Greg....Guiomar Novaes in her beautiful 1958 recordings of the Etudes plays this Etude at approximately this tempo. Maybe a TINY bit slower at times, but basically the same. Thank you for all these beautiful videos. Nick
