In 2023, the EU achieved 27% of its total energy consumption from renewables, so there is progress but still a long way to go. The percentages cited are specifically for electricity generation, which is only a part of the overall energy mix. Hopefully, geopolitical tensions won’t hinder this progress, allowing us to breathe cleaner air and avoid the environmental impacts of burning fossil fuels.

I believe that the first bank of wind turbines at the Dogger Bank wind farm went online recently, and there are plans to massively increase the size of the wind farm as part of the North Sea Wind Power Hub by 2050. In southern Europe, they're building solar farms as fast as possible, and we could see large solar power installations in Spain, southern France, Italy, the Balkans and Greece over the next 25 years.

Dear Sam, I think you might have mixed up electricity generation, with total energy consumption. The target you mention of 45 % is for TOTAL energy consumption, not just electricity generation.Therefor you cannot just compare this with current energy mix for electricity generation. In EU a lot of energy is used for heat, especially during winter, and also for transportation Therefor reaching 45% of total energy consumption is neither easy nor a low bar. Still I think it will be reached.

As an American, the only reason I went solar and storage was to reduce my dependency on public utility. Freedom is not free and the system wasn’t cheap, but 100% worth it. I have zero interest in the politics of the energy debate.

As I watched the video my solar turned on (morning) and started exceed my use to start the day's export. Installed January and just exceeded 3MWh produced. Solar is fantastic.

Let's not forget the elephant in the room. The Ukraine war. When those gas pipelines blew up, europe had an "oh sh!t" moment wondering if they were going to freeze, followed by a ouch my wallet moment buying gas, then wondered what they could do, and renewables were ready for their moment in the sun. Priced right. The Euros had experience with it, and importantly, domestically produced energy security.

The problem in Europe is not production but storage. every year more and more GWh are being cut from renewables because there is overproduction and no corresponding storage. In Greece, for example, in 2023 we threw away more than 250GWh of clean energy, while in 2024 until April we threw away 320GWh of clean energy.

Electricity generation is the low hanging fruit. Transport and home heahthing are harder nuts to crack.

This is incredible! Wonderful news, hopefully a few more renewable percent will be added in this to next year

One result is that the power grid is unable to accommodate the changed power supply, being unable under circumstances to transport electricity produced by PV and wind.

The growth of renewables is commendable. But the European problem is insufficient storage. Tesla is the gold standard for short term storage and grid stability. Longer term storage is an unanswered question. Hundreds of companies are trying to build the next best technology.

What?? No decline in oil over the last decade? In 2020 oil (WTI) went negative. yes negative!! Those taking delivery of futures contract were being paid $50 per barrel to take away free oil. The event was the larges decline in the oil price in world history.

Europe needs their own energy supply. All others are vulnerable and Russia's military is a good reason.

Another great video.
Can you make a video of comparison between different European countries. Some are shamefully behind.

Wut?!! Raise of extreme right in Europe? How could this be!?

I just want to know how to get wind power on my home. Solar is easy but wind is less clear.

Saw a news clip that indicated that if you use Solar energy in Australia people will soon have to pay the energy companies to accept the excess energy. So instead of getting paid by the energy companies for putting excess energy back into the grid the people will have to pay the energy companies to accept it. Export chargers i think. Crazy if true.

My friend you made a mistake in the video
45% goal of EU is for total energy. That means heating/cooling of houses and transportation. Not just electricity production

To provide the correct context for the statement at 2:45, "The EU is now in the midst of a historic, permanent shift away from fossil fuels" and toward historic, permanent, record high energy prices which will hurt the poor. But then again, the green movement was never about helping actual humans.
