I was 35 years old when I learnt that a fossil isn't the bones frozen in time but a rock replica of the bones. Now I think about it, it makes sense

This process is called superposition, where newer, younger layers form on top of older layers. The deeper the bones and skeletal remains of dinosaurs and prehistoric animals that have died out, the older they are.

I keep trying to simulate this process in my mind with the bodies of Pompey. I know plaster was involved but I still don’t get what happened to the bodies after the hot ash fell on them.
