RV Winter Living in Rio Grande Valley (RGV)

Our first winter in our motorhome in south Texas in RGV. (Rio Grande Valley)

We used our Thousand Trails Membership and Trails Collection to utilize all the Encore Parks that are peppered all along Interstate 2, between Harlingen & McAllen, Tx. We started our winter trip by going south on Interstate 69E starting from Houston, through Rockport, then Corpus Christi and landing at our first Encore Resort in Harlingen, TX. Lot’s of construction on 69E just south of Houston so when we left RGV, we went north on HWY 281, then to 77 to I-10 and up to Conroe, TX. We were not going to go through that construction again. Now back in Conroe, we’re going to wrap up some final details before we begin our 15 week trek to Maine for the summer arriving around June 1st.

During our 13 week stay in RGV, we made a lot of new friends, saw a whole new culture first hand, went to Mexico TWICE, and one of those Mexico trips was spent going to the dentist and getting our teeth cleaned. RGV weather was great for the most part, but in the beginning was real windy. Our motorhome is holding up really well, and we’re finding living and traveling in it very easy and stress free.

UPDATE:
Joanie & I went to Mexico a week before Christmas in 2019 and the fee coming back over the bridge to the US side, went up from $.25 to $.30 so be sure to bring a quarter and a nickel for each person.

An RGV native here! If there is something we look forward to down in the Rio Grande, it’s the arrival of our “Winter Texans” as we call them! We love seeing you guys here and appreciate everyone who continues returning to The Valley even though it’s not the prettiest at times and on some days gets very windy. (We also don’t enjoy the strong wind haha)
Loved your video, and hope to see you soon again! And to everyone who is considering visiting, please do!

I truly enjoy watching your videos. Your channel is the first place I look for information. As new RV'ers, we have learned so much that we have the confidence to try things that we would never would have attempted before. Thanks for everything you have done to keep us heading in the right direction! We know that you have recently become aware of some health challenges. We wish you the best of luck for a full and speedy recovery.!

There is no one else, that I have found, that is showing the kind of things you are showing. I plan to buy a Thousand Trails pass and live this same lifestyle. So, it is REALLY helpful to see these videos. Thank you for all your work putting them together. :)

Great information, I never had heard of RGV before I saw this video. Sounds like a neat place to spend the winter in an RV without a huge budget. Thank you.

We had reservations at Bay View in Rockport for the winter, then Hurricane Harvey hit and changed everything. We still went to Texas without any plans other than visiting my daughter in Fort Worth. When the weather took a nasty turn we didn’t know what to do or where to go so we decided to head for the coast. We ended up staying a month in Bay View. The park was destroyed by the hurricane as was the entire town of Rockport. I never realized the damage a hurricane could do. We met some great people there but it wasn’t very nice. Blue tarps on every roof, most of the businesses closed, and piles of debris everywhere. We still liked the area though and decided to return the following winter. This time we stayed in Aransas Pass. It was a wonderful winter with a lot of nice people and we hope to go back again someday.
