Episode 3 of our PSA series features testimonials from communities which have been left outside of the Cockpit Country Protected Area (CCPA), where bauxite mining and prospecting is expanding. Since the Jamaican Prime Minister’s 2017 announcement of the designated CCPA boundary, new mining leases have been granted by the government which will allow bauxite companies to mine right up to the edge of the CCPA boundary.

On November 21, 2017, Prime Minister of Jamaica, the Rt. Hon. Andrew Holness announced the designated Cockpit Country Protected Area (CCPA) boundary in Parliament. In his announcement, Prime Minister Holness said the area would comprise of approximately 74,726 hectares and will include existing forest reserves, significant hydrological and ecological features and cultural and heritage sites. Through the Advancing the Protection of Jamaica’s Cockpit Country project, JET continues to advocate for an expedited ground-truthing of the CCPA boundary, establishment of buffer zones and the involvement of civil society and local communities in management planning for the protected area.

Thanks for your video. I am a Jamaican who left Jamaica at the age of 18, but my love of Jamaica, the land of my birth has never waned. I watched the video with a mixture of shock, bewilderment and anger. The questions that occupied my mind while watching were: Are Jamaican politicians sleep-walking through the threats to our environment that have now reached a critical point in our lives? Maybe they are living on another planet. They are supposed to be the educated elite; how is it then that relatively uneducated people can see with clarity what the politicians are not able to see, or is it the case that they are so blinded by monetary greed that they are blinded to the arguments being made by the wise people in this video. COME ON JAMAICAN POLITICIANS, WAKE UP!

The Coptic country is the Amazon of the entire island geographical and those two parties JLP/PNP leadership are only looking at it from a revenue standpoint but gone were the days when illiteracy was the order.Jamaicans today are by far are very literate and political leaders cannot tricked them anymore. They are elected to serve the interest of the citizens of Jamaica and not their own entrepreneurs agendas.21 centuries young and old Jamaicans are not asleep and know that geographical base of Jamaica call Coptic country is the Amazon of the entire island and MUST be nurtured and protected for our existence of our home base on the island There can be no deal.Mining industry much alt desist and go back to their countries of origin and leave Jamaica alone This will be a long long fight with the people's, those two parties Why would they want to fight with the entire country that vote them in and out Don't they not know it would cause a revolting rise up of a sleeping giant?
