In recent years, the debate has gained increasing consistency, visibility and relevance, seeking to overcome epistemological barriers between, on the one hand, an evolutionary model that relegates cultural phenomena to a merely proximal role (the “extended phenotype”) and, on the other, views of culture as a uniquely human process and relatively disconnected from the evolutionary biology of the species.
