I played a banner once and it was an almost religious experience. The reason they have such big necks is that they were made during the war and they couldn't spare metal for truss rods. So they made big thick necks to prevent neck warping. The one I played felt like it was a living thing. Just strumming a G chord on one will take your breath away.
