After Ethnic Cleansing Armenians from Nagorno-Karabakh, Why Did Azerbaijan Get to Host COP29?

We continue our coverage of the COP29 U.N. climate summit hosted in Baku, Azerbaijan, wth a look at Azerbaijan's treatment of the country's Armenian minority population. Last year, the Azerbaijani government ethnically cleansed Armenians from the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region, leading to the forced expulsion of some 100,000 Armenians from the enclave and gruesome human rights violations, including cultural erasure and the torture and mass killing of civilians. There are at least 23 known Armenian political prisoners currently held in Azerbaijan and many more who are not identified. These colonial policies against Armenians "started long ago," says Armenian climate and antiwar activist Arshak Makichyan. He calls out the silence of international actors on the persecution of Armenians during COP29, stating that "Azerbaijan was allowed to greenwash the genocide" while "we continue to be threatened."

As a German, I am shocked by this awful ethnic cleansing by dictator Aliev. Artsakh-Karabakh is known to be Armenian and Nakhijevan was also a part of Armenia. What a shame!

Arshak is not really an official voice for these matters and is not used to speaking about anything else but climate action. He forgets to mention that ICC issued also an interim measure in Feb2023 ordering Azerbaijan to stop the blockade of Nagorno Kharabakh, but Azerbaijan simply ignored that ruling and went ahead with its Ethnic Cleansing and the UN that was supposed to enforce the ICC ruling basically failed its job. Armenia is almost sure to win the case against Azerbaijan in ICC (which is still on-going) that’s why the Azeri regime keeps pressuring the Armenian government and threatening with military invasion and further occupation of Armenia to get them to drop the case. God willing they will end up issuing and arrest warrant for Aliyev too!

Arshak did not mention that Israel is and has been the no 1 arms supplier of Azerbaijan (since 2020 at least) and has continued arms shipments even after October 7, while asking US for more weapons for “self-defence”. I mean they keep asking for help with military munitions from US, while they have so much of them they easily spare loads to another genocidal regime like Azerbaijan while they are in active war themselves…

The estimable Israeli newspaper Haaretz recently editorialized that Israel has, in their words, “its fingerprints” all over Azerbaijan’s ethnic cleansing in Nagorno-Karabakh. Haaretz also contends that “Israel hasn’t just supplied Azerbaijan with arms. It has also helped it distort history” by its refusal to recognize the Armenian genocide, which the Israeli regime merely defines as a “tragedy.”

Nagorno Karabakh (Artsakh) has never been part of Azerbaijan, during soviet times it has been an independent autonomous republic, not even under Azerbaijan's jurisdiction.
