My Summer Car is an open world, car mechanic, and survival game in development by Finnish developer Johannes Rojola of Amistech Games. It was released on Steam's Early Access program on October 24, 2016, and is expected to be out of early access in 2022.

It’s crazy that Johannes Rojola became A millionaire by creating this game, in just 2019 and 2020 he made 1, 100 000euros… crazy. And i assume he made even more in 2016-2018.

Still in early access but it is basically done. It made by 2 people, both perfectionists, who dont plan to take it out of early access until all the bugs are fixed. Also the game is made to be hard and the website even describes it as a game that is not meant to be fun but is meant to be rewarding.

This game is absolutely hilarious for Finns, it's essentially a mid-nineties 19 year old simulator. All the things everywhere in this game are so recognisable, Teimo's store, vast spans of land with nothing in them, one car wide dirt roads in the middle of nowhere, a house every one kilometer and nothing in between, that specific tiny moped that should legally go 45 km/h but actually does 85, the sauna, the interior decoration, the washing detergent, the booze bottle, the Datsun 100A summer car, the way people talk and the things they say, everything in this game is either honest to god how 90% of Finnish countryside is or a pun and word play on it.

The whole game exploded as a niche parody of 90's Finnish countryside, and the absurd lengths of inconvenience and dullness of the everyday tasks is all one big joke which surely translates over to foreign cultures. Funniest of all things is, like you said, the customization and depth of the car engine simulation is ridiculous. It could have been just a meme game, but then inside there's actually really deep mechanics and gameplay, and you do it all even when there's no goal in the game. Again like you said, it's a 19 year old simulator and you want to build a car and that's the "end goal" of it all but even then you get no fanfare and no prizes, no credits sequence or win condition.

On the early access topic: this game was basically playable with the car engine building when it first was released if I remember correctly, but the developers have kept adding layers upon layers of things to do. I really urge you to read old changelogs for game updates on Steam, they're absolutely hilarious. For example one of them is "randomized moose routes more" because moose are notorious in Finland for wandering around and causing both serious and even fatal crashes on dirt roads here. The changelogs are a gold mine of comedy and playing this game when it was early in development was like christmas every update, because the devs added some ridiculous new thing or made the existing features even more obscure or inconvenient because it's hillarious that you can, say, burn your house down permanently if you leave your sauna on for hours on end without checking on it.

@7:18 Do it 5 times and a suitcase with money will spawn. Stealing it will have an impact to the plot of the game but you need at least the van or waggon for that.

I don't agree with your sentiment about the game being in early access for so long. In most cases, it's true, there's no good reason for an early access game lasting so long. However, understand, this game was made by precisely 2 people. No teams of programmers, graphics designers, sound designers, QA testers, etc.

Just two people and two computers. Got to cut them some slack for that.

@5:42 It is actually pretty easy if you can memorize a few landmarks. E. g. first train crossing, then 2x right and follow the highway to get to town asap.
