Of all the historically great footballing nations - no other has managed to reach the World Cup final as many times as the Netherlands, and still fail to have ever won the World Cup. As a country that's tied for producing the most Ballon d'Or calibre players - they've fallen just a bit short of winning the coveted trophy. Let's look at a brief history of their tragic shortcomings and see if they have what it really takes to win it in the World Cup 2022 in Qatar.

As a Dutchman I still feel the struggle the Netherlands had in 2010 when they reached the finals only to lose to Spain. I was only 12 years old than. Many people in the netherlands still believe that the goal iniesta scored was offside. Even though I'm not sure about it myself. Still. I hope our country will one the world cup at least once. Moge het koninkrijk der Nederlanden ooit zegevieren! 🇳🇱

i’d say 2014 netherlands was a great team as well. they were insanely close to reaching the final. if robben had scored, or if they managed to sub krul on, they would’ve won

Pound for pound the Dutch are a top football country. For such a small country they’ve produced some of the greatest players, managers, and tactics which have changed football. Their influence on the game has been substantial and still is.

Coming back to this after Netherlands barely lost to Argentina in pens is truly heartbreaking. I live in Belgium so I was routing for Netherlands after we got knocked out and I think they had a decent chance.

That 1998 Netherlands squad is not talken about enough. Van der Sar, Overmars, Stam, Seedorf, Davids, Bergkamp, Kluivert and de Boer are all footballing legends. At the moment we only have Van Dijk and de Jong.

I am actually from the netherlands, and the funny thing is, that we think we dont have a good team. We are always very critical about are own team While we have a decent squad

Gullit, Van Basten, Cruyff, Bergkamp, Seedorf, Davids, Kluivert, Robben, Van Persie, Sneijder, Rijkaard just to name some of the top ones, still a lot more. One of the best nations at producing football talent in the world, & for such a small country it’s very impressive.

Bro, those Eastern European teams from way back were also on fire. People don't know how much Czechoslovakia and Hungary used to scare Brazil back in the day, until you check their player stats on the old Nintendo soccer, and wonder why you never heard many of those names besides a few such as Puskas. 😁 TV and Internet has made things easier in modern times though.

The dutch are always my favourites after my country Germany drops out. In terms of Karma no one nearly deserves a WC win like them!
Greetings to our neighours, i hope you ll win it one day!

I hope the Netherlands win it one day. It’s been long overdue, they’re one of my favorite national teams.

As a Croatian it was frustrating that we didn't make it during last 2 WC's, especially 2018. I can only imagine how frustrating it must be for the Dutch who were often playing semis and even final 2010 where they were fire.

Era of Cruyff was fantastic! Besides Cruyff you had van Hanagem ho is mostly overlooked but such a great player. He was the strategist on midfield.

As a german it's funny how we used to hate each other back in the 80s and 90s and how we seemed to have grown to the point where the dutch are the second country I'm rooting for after my own.

I am brazilian and I remember the first time i've watched the Eurocup in 2008, and how I was impacted with that dutch team, I used to support them in that Euro, and I also remember the match against Netherlands in 2010, no defeat made me so sad as that against Dutch, and in 2014 I saw a great Dutch team too. In every Eurocup I support Dutch, and in the WC if Brazil is eliminated I also support Dutch too.

Something I notice with the Dutch teams is that we usually have an incredibly magnificent goalkeeper too. Throughout the history, you have legends like van der Sar, Stekelenburg, Cillessen, Tim Krul, and, of course, the new hero, Noppert.

Football is changing, these smaller teams are using great tactics to beat larger teams.

As a Dutch man i can say, Thanks for bringing those trauma's back. 😂 On a more serious note, i think we get too cocky. If you see the interviews just before the 1974. We were talking if we had already beaten Germany. Also, we mostly start strong and after winning a few games we start talking about the finals, forget about the opponent and get cocky. So we lose.

Special mention to the 1994 Dutch squad. They were immensely talented and were unfortunate enough that their quarterfinal was against future champions Brazil, in a quarterfinal matchup that was worthy of a final, and a match where it was a shame someone had to lose. Unfortunately for the Dutch, they fought hard to come back from 2-0 down only to fall victim to a Brazil winner in the 81st minute.
