Why Is My Laptop So Slow And How To Make It Faster
So you have a old slow laptop and want to speed it up? well this video is for you. The best way make your old laptop fast again is either replace the CPU if the CPU has has a socket in the old laptop. The second way is to add more ram to the laptop if possible. The third way is to replace the hard drive and install a SSD into the laptop.

Nice video.

I upgrade old computers with SSD's all the time. Just did 2 yesterday.
Only thing you have to wait for is the clone process, and even that is painfully slow for the final copy of data from the old drive to the new one.

9 times out of 10 on old systems, all you need to do is get replace those clunky, grindy, mechanical hard drives, and don't need to upgrade RAM at all to see an incredible speed performance.
Honestly, I don't know how we survived years ago without SSD's, and have no idea how they are even allowed to be in some systems being sold brand new today. It's almost criminal to do so.

Good advice. I've a Toshiba Satellite from 2011. Put in a reclaimed SSD and extra ram for less than £15 thanks to eBay. What a difference!

Thanks Brian.
Great way of giving an ageing laptop a computational boost.
Which is an excellent alternative, when considering the massive amount of e-waste inundating our world today.
IMHO, keeping our devices functioning for as longer as they can, is better for everyone.

I still have a working 98SE (Gateway) + 1 home built, XP (Acer) + 1 home built and Vista system (Gateway laptop). I keep them for only a few reasons
1. I can still play my old flight sim along with a couple of older games that I liked
2. Because of certain programs or software that is still useful that I liked and no longer available.
3. Kinda kept as museum pieces and they are never used connected to online.

Some are stripped for useable parts and possible rebuilds for whatever I might want to create, such as an alternate operating system, NAS, drive storage.
Other than that when something is too old ( Pentium era or older) it pretty much becomes recyclable waste.

You are correct with if your system is too old don't invest too much money into it, just get a newer system when able to do so. Parts are getting hard to come by for these older systems.

Great video Brian!

Yes Brian my oldest laptop is quite slow but not as slow as the one your video. My main laptop now has one of those Nv ME drives and stacks of RAM in it and is super fast. Having said that my other two laptops are still quite quick though I don't use them much these days. Plus I have found following your channel for many years now (from the old Vista days) has also helped me understand and do upgrading stuff and fixes for computers i have had!🙂

I just finished doing this type of project to an old Dell Latitude E6410 to try to squeeze a couple more years out of it. While you're at it you can also blow any dust out of the cpu cooling fan, and maybe even reapply new thermal paste (if you decide to just keep the same processor). Hoping to make it last for the remaining support life of Windows 10.

There Wares Are all Different In many, many ways but cannot wait to pick-up my 32RAM & SSD should do the job on a lightweight laptop most government offices use, I did add extra RAM as 2-bays below the Keyboard & another 2 bays below the laptop “ why went all out with a non moving parts SSD” . Adding more memory and an SSD is always a good idea but for a very basic internet machine installing Chrome OS Flex (if it works, test from USB before install) would make it even faster than Windows, more secure and less maintenance would be required for the end user. Keep in mind, Chrome OS Flex is not yet final but will be in the very near future.

Thanx for the video. Oh for the days when you could just remove a cover and access things inside rather than now that you have to strip the back off and quite often the keyboard as well.

Almost similiar like my laptop, so slow on windows, but for linux, not bad at all and can do the virtualbox alike...

I did similar to my wife's Dell laptop. I swapped the 1TB HDD for a 512GB SSD (she never really saves stuff on the laptop HD as here work in on line. it already had 1 4Gb & 1 2GB ram so I left them as they were. It is definitely much faster.

I think you can further improve it by changing the Os to a lighter one like Linux

Good video as always just one problem. as it doesn't really show how tospeed up a lap top it only shows how toupgrade specific parts of a lap top. How about how to speed up a lap top when you can't afford to add or upgrade anything! Take for example like a cheap HP notebook 15 an do a benchmark, then optimize it manually an then take another benchmark so we can see the performance difference!

Hello Brian, you have a great style and your videos are so informative! Thanks for all you do. I do have a question... what website did you use to show the specs for that laptop? Looks like a great resource. Thanks!
