We loved this episode of The Doctor's Farmacy Podcast in which Dr. Mark Hyman interviews Maria about health, functional medicine, caring for ourselves, preventing illness, and more. The two covered a ton of ground and went deep, starting off with Maria sharing family health anecdotes, her efforts to close the research gap, and Maria even shares her own Function Health test results which revealed Maria's "biological age." This a mighty conversation we're sure you'll enjoy.

The full episode airs this Wednesday, June 12th and The Sunday Paper was lucky enough to get an exclusive sneak peek.

My mom was diagnosed with FTD - frontal temporal dementia in 2007. The doctors told me to soldier on. She would be dead in 2 -2.5 years. I asked what could make a difference. He said whatever’s good for the heart is good for the brain. I researched everything I could and I changed my mom’s diet, made her exercise appropriate to her ability, lose weight, play memory games, we’d take trips all across the USA and when it got boring on the road we’d start naming anything we could imagine: presidents, countries, state and world capitals, wars and dates, ad nauseam. It was exhausting, frustrating, overwhelming and magical, amazing as well as shocking bc my mom turned 93 today 6-26-24. She’s not as sharp as she once was but we still get out our lists in the living room or bedroom and talk about all our trips. Ty for your advocacy. ❤❤❤

My mom was diagnosed when she was about 90 yrs old with dementia, she didn t want to go to a nursing home, so she lived with me, I think interaction with family & taking her wherever we went, helped her live to 97, a lot of good stimulation, food, family, friends made her happy & comfortable & it wasn t easy, but I d do it again in a heartbeat

It was horrible and sad to watch my sweet mom slowly deteriorate and die from dementia. I miss her dearly every single day. She was beautiful and loving, selfless and giving.

My dad lived to be a few months shy of 90. He lived through the great depression, he was a pilot in WWII, he ALWAYS said to eat real food, he ate full fat cottage cheese, drank buttermilk and ate real butter. His mind stayed sharp until the end. I miss him every day.

Statins are anti-cholesterol. Low fat diets are anti-cholesterol.
Cholesterol is required to build the myelin sheath which protects/insulates your nerves, allowing communication within your body. Cholesterol is also required for a healthy brain.
Your great grandparents exercised regularly and didn't worry about cholesterol.
Keep your weight down, exercise, sleep well and eat your vegetables and meat. Avoid processed foods like your great grandparents did. And drink lots of water (keep hydrated).

I use to see her dad when I was driving to work in the 70s and he always waved at me because of the frequency that I saw him and because I drove a bright green convertible Chevelle that stood out. Was very sad when I learned he had passed from Alzheimers.

I saw my uncles and my father go through it. It was hard to see their skills and knowledge evaporate and then seeing them think that they were in a room full of strangers. It is such a cruel disease.

I find that the general public often lumps all dementias into Alzheimer’s disease. My father had Lewy Body Dementia & I would like more research on this disease too, as well as all other dementia types.

It's food, the ultra processed foods that are not meant to be in our bodies!

My dad was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 2017, he passed away about 9 months ago but it was from lung cancer. He was so spoiled and loved, I'm sure that it added to his quality and length of life 💙🙏🏻

Love me some Maria Shriver. Could have lived a comfie life but chose to get her hands dirty and actively participate. Respect.
