Has anybody heard of the "phantom airship" sightings from 1896-1897? As in this case, people reported aircraft just a little ahead of the technology of the time. Most suspected eccentric inventors working in secret. A few crackpots thought they were from Mars. Eventually, the sightings just stopped, and the mystery was never solved. This reminds me of that.
