At April they prefer lower extractions, but I've found that their method and brewer can be used for really high extraction too. What makes it possible and what is interesting with their method that the drawdown time is not really affected by grind size. I assume it happens because with the really fast pour (100ml in 10s) you essentially stir up all the grounds so even if it's on the finer end you will still have a good drawdown time.

What I tried and which resulted in some really nice brew for me is to use their method (so 12g coffee, 2x(30ml circle - 70ml center pour in 10s)) with really fine grind setting. Not espresso, but what you would use for aeropress or moka pot. The drawdown will still be around 2:30, but the extraction will be much higher (by taste, I don't have a TDS meter unfortunately). Just make sure that the circle pour is really fast: you aim to stir up the ground with the water flow as if you would stir up with a spoon. So aim to pour faster than 10s than slower than that.

Recommend the Espro Bloom for flat bottom; good for sweet cups (vs. V60 for fruit/acid). I use both, depending on my coffee.

Nice recipe. I tired it and liked it for fast flowing coffees. However, I cannot get a flat bed. Do you push the stick down to then bottom of the coffee bed when stirring or you only stir the top water? What would be grind size for Comandante. I used 15 clicks. Does it sound right?

Is it helpful if we could put the puck screen/flat mesh tea strainer at the bottom of this kind of flat-bottom dripper? Not sure if it can help to prevent fast drawdown and hence weak coffee taste

I tried the April dripper last year. Every brew I tried would stall out completely. It would clog every single time. I contacted April about it and they said they were noticing the same thing, and thought it was a problem with their current batch of custom filters. They said they had some updated and improved filters on the way, and would send me some as soon as they came in. I never received any of the new batch of filters and never heard back from them. The experience left a bad taste in my mouth.

Edit: Update. After I posted this, I decided to reach back out to Patrik at April. He responded immediately and shipped out a new batch of filters to me for free. He likely got really busy and forgot our conversation, but either way, he made good on it.

what most flat bottom generally brings to the table is usually a sweeter, highly aromatic and maybe a bit more body but less complex than the conical. Your recipes tend to defy these stereotypes. I would assume April dripper brings more complexity than the other flat bottoms because the Patrik wants the sweet but complex coffees.

In my country, its $35 CAD for plastic and $68 CAD for glass which is much fairer. (or a little less in conversion and some 3-8% discount+free shipping)

I might want a glass cause I love glass drippers. However, I don't know about the price since its on the steeper side either way. They are actually made by some of the best craftsmen in the country. IMO, their glass in general looked much better and elegant than Hario's but I don't want to say it as a disrespect to Hario.(Their glasswares cost more than Hario's so its no wonder)
