This was recorded on New Years Eve in Fargo, 1940. The band was taking a break, when Webster started playing solo on stage. The recording engineer, seeing what was going on, started his recording equipment, and gradually, other members of the band came back on stage and joined in. This was truly an improvised song, and it worked out wonderfully.

Great and inspired solo of tenor sax as smooth as velvet.

Webster was under rated, and an expert ballad player !

Ben said... that the backing jimmy blanton provided on this tune was the greatest he ever had and heard!

Gorgeous. It's that ripe peach feeling again. Ben Webster alone the equal of Hodges for pure un-sacharine sweetness. Just a personal unqualified opinion.

Jimmy Blanton on bass. Thanks Terry Teachout for the insight.
