There is a widespread misconception that Chinese is one of the most difficult languages to learn in the world. As a native Chinese speaker who has been learning English for over 30 years, I would argue that Chinese is actually much simpler than English. While it may be challenging for foreigners whose native language is alphabetic-based to get started, once you overcome that initial hurdle, mastering the language becomes relatively easy.

One of the reasons is that Chinese has a relatively small vocabulary set. For normal reading and writing, it only requires about 3000 words, and to become a master, about 5000 words. In contrast, English has an endless amount of new words to learn, making it difficult to achieve mastery.

Furthermore, Chinese grammar is straightforward and bears similarities to English. Therefore, once you grasp the basics, navigating Chinese grammar becomes easier.

In conclusion, while Chinese may present initial difficulties for non-native speakers, its simplicity in terms of vocabulary and grammar makes it an attainable language to master.
