On June 10, 2022, Dean Tony Bernardo welcomed, congratulated and conferred degrees on the UCLA Anderson MBA, EMBA, FEMBA and Ph.D. classes of 2022. Highlights of the school’s first in-person commencement ceremony since 2019 included a moving tribute to the late Kwame Firempong, a UCLA
MBA/M.D. student whose mission in his short life was to eliminate health equities. UCLA Anderson established a fellowship fund in his name, and his mother accepted his posthumous degree.
Keynote speaker Angela Williams, president and CEO of United Way Worldwide urged bravery among the graduates. The daughter of South Carolina civil rights activists, Williams said, “We are living a second pandemic of anxiety, depression, division and fear. The obstacles we face are enormous. I hope you’ll leave here thinking of these challenges as yours, too. Shine a light and stay brave!”
EMBA class speaker Jasson Crockett (’22), a 2022 John Wooden Leadership Fellow, extolled the achievements of his classmates under the workplace pressures that called on them to lead in ways that were unimaginable pre-pandemic. “EMBAs,” he said, “are at an age that missed the influencer craze but know how to make an impact and find creative solutions to immediate problems.”
Vivek Mahadevan (’22), speaker for the full-time MBA Class of 2022, observed that, because pandemic lockdown forced remote learning, many classmates were meeting each other for the first time in person on the very last day of their program. “It’s been a strange bonding experience but it’s our bonding experience,” he said.
FEMBA class speaker Stephen Peterson (’22) specialized in social impact, and he encouraged classmates to embrace the MBA as “a way of going through the world.” He said, “It’s easy to check out and say, ‘I’ve got mine.’ It’s harder to look around and see the world burning and say, ‘What am I going to do about it?’”
