La révélation tardive de ses origines a mené le chorégraphe français Hervé Koubi aux sources de sa propre histoire, en Algérie, le pays de ses ancêtres. Ce que le jour doit à la nuit raconte sa fascinante quête identitaire, faite d’enchevêtrement et de tissage complexe, à laquelle douze danseurs de rue algériens et burkinabés, ses « frères retrouvés », prêtent corps. D’une rare authenticité, ils font feu de tout bois, éblouissants d’énergie et de technique. Born in France and belatedly discovering his true origins and those of his parents, Algerians from birth, Hervé Koubi chororegraphed Ce que le jour doit à la nuit (What the Day Owes to the Night), a fascinating recounting of his quest for identity. This highly physical, stunningly fluid work for 12 French-Algerian and African male dancers (his“long-lost brothers”) combines gymnastics, martial arts, b-boying,- modern dance and ballet with powerful imagery evocative of Orientalist paintings and the stone filigree of Islamic architecture. A compelling andenthralling exploration of his roots.
