Functional Fantasy: Trunks' Sword and Link's Master Sword

Simpler usually means more practical, and these designs are no exception. Both could be made in real life and would be usable, with a couple of tweaks in one case. So if you appreciate elements of realism in fantasy (which Dragon Ball Z obviously doesn't have in great abundance) you might like these swords.

Actually, yes, Akira Toriyama always drew western swords with some kind of hibaki-esque fitting because he thought that swords looked weird without it.

I love it when we see functional swords in fiction, it just proves that real swords are cool too.

I've noticed that in a lot of Japanese animated films when they depict European swords they put a habaki on them

On back scabbards: Just recently watched Badland Hunters on Netflix and there is a scene where the hero is using a shotgun and takes out a lot of enemies when another group comes around the corner down the hall and he's out of ammo so he reaches for his machete over his shoulder in what looks like it's supposed to be a bada$$ move and he can't pull it out, ends up spinning in a circle trying then pulls it around towards the front to draw it. Got a good laugh from that.

2:08 I kind of noticed that Akira Toriama likes to add that collar on european-looking swords, you see that in Chrono Trigger and Dragon Quest games

Any time skal brings up the old 2014 days in these videos it blows my mind that I've been watching for 10 years. Definitely the only channel i still watch after all that time.

I remember someone saying that "Trunk's sword is what a Japanese person imagines when they're asked to picture what a Western sword looks like"

I'm amused to see the foam Master Sword, since I own that one. I pulled mine off the wall to fiddle with and compare while watching lol.

The weird thing is that they got Trunks sword wrong. In the manga it doesn't have the ring in the middle of the grip and the pommel doesn't have a lip. I also don't think it has the fuller or that blade geometry. It's just a straight up blade with flat facets.

I get that they wanted to make it a bit more fancy and all but if they wanted to do that they could have just made the Z sword. Trunks used it and sure it also doesn't have a fuller but it does have a small flare from the guard up to the actual blade and is therefore a little more detailed than his original sword. Not to mention the handle and pommel are also a little more detailed and fancy too.

Holy crap, I've been watching your vids for a decade at least then.

Interesting fact about swords, some are pointy and some are not that pointy. One of the facts of all time.

Of all the swords that you covered, Trunk's sword is, by far, the most straight forward, realist and usable. In DragonballZ, you can't tell the profile of the handle. So, I put that on the person who made it.

The metal Master Sword is missing it's fullers. At least, the edges seems to have a hollow grind... It looks bad and seems to be bad.

All of these have been great. Really enjoyed your banter, and looking at the cool swords. Even the ones that weren't that practical. Great videos.

As a LARPer my fave trick was having two hilts showing over my shoulders that were actually daggers.

To be fair, that pommel is perfect for ending them rightly.
