Praying like this should only be done if there is absolutely no room, meaning all rows are filled behind the Imaam. Once all rows are filled behind the Imaam, then you can line up on the right of the Imaam, once completely filled then the left.

When there is only 1 person following the imam, then he will on the right side making sure his heel is behind the heel of the imam.

However when there is more than one person then they have to stand behind the imam in the usual way of prayer. The only exception is when there is not enough space for them to stand so back then they can stand closer as long as their heels are behind the Imams heals.

If the salah has started with only one follower, then when the second follower comes, he will pull the other follower back in order to make the row behind the imam.

the report narrated by Muslim, in al-Saheeh (no. 3010), from Jaabir who said: “The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) stood up to pray, and I came and stood on his left.
