NEWBIE MASTERING MISTAKE 🫣

If you're new to mastering, this is the newbie mistake you don't want to make 🙅🏻‍♂️

Don't EQ with loads of surgical cuts across the whole stereo field...

When you're making cuts this drastic, you are taking away from instruments in the mix

In mixing you can get away with it but in mastering, your ears will pick up on it and it won't sound very good.

Instead, go broader with your boosts as you can see in my FabFilter Pro Q-3 preset

Resonance filters are pretty common in mastering but they definitely are very easy to overdo and take a trained ear to pinpoint the frequency determine what harm is being done. Dyn EQ 1-2 db max can really well with surgical, narrow cuts like that though

I find myself disagreeing with this as well as thinking those hills are quite excessive for mastering. This is not to say Streaky is wrong, if it sounds good it is good. But to me and those I learn from, mastering is done in subtleties, especially if you have access to the mixing. And surgical cuts can always be needed.

Firstly, I enjoy your vids and have picked up loads of great stuff from you so thanks! Couple of genuine questions on this: are they not two types of eqing for different purposes? Narrow q notches for taming unwanted resonances/frequencies and boosted shaping eq for getting a certain overall sound? And wouldn’t you be applying eq to the across the whole frequency range and not stereo field (doesn’t look like mid side eq in the vid).

Not long and you will get me to buy it😬😬

the "mistake" shows surgical cuts while your recommendation shows smooth boosts. Are you suggesting boosting instead when what the mix needs is a cut or what am I missing?
