Lonzo Ball Old Shooting Form Breakdown ᴴᴰ

My first analysis of a college player. As the focus of the basketball season moves away from college basketball, let's not forget about the potential no.1 overall pick; Lonzo Ball. His dad has been making headlines for saying some ridiculous stuff. I prefer Lonzo's style; quiet, understated and speaking with his game. Unfortunately I'm not a fan of his jumpshot and this video explains why!

I would feel like this shot is easier to block because most defenders are right handed.

It honestly wouldn't look as weird if his off-hand wasn't so strange. If he had a normal guide hand (like Beal, Klay, Harden) his form would be somewhat (keyword, somewhat) reminiscent of KD's, KD being somebody who also brings the ball up from the left side of his body.

Being a shooter myself...it looks like it would hurt to shoot like that....extra on the elbow and wrist. Also, the added time to get the ball to the other side of your head would give a top notch NBA defender/defence time to steal the ball easily...or at least lock you down and not let you get your shoot off. He's a good set shooter at best

You can tell he's a left eye dominant shooter. He's aiming with his left eye and as a right handed player, it's really difficult to have the same form as other right handed shooters. KD, Joe Johnson, and Lebron are kind of the same way, where they kind of bring the ball up from the middle to the left/middle of their face, but it's much much less pronounced.

LaVar has said that TWO of his sons were left-handed at birth and he 'fixed' them and changed them to be right handed through tying their left hand behind their backs, etc. THIS is probably a result of that poor decision to change a lefty to a righty.

According to his dad the reason he brings the ball up towards the left side of his body is because when bigger better defenders would force him left when he was younger the only way he was able to get off his shot was by bringing his right hand to the left where the ball was and releasing it upwards from there so it would be harder to block when the defender is on the right side

his ball movement is different but release is almost same as any other player. the way he moves his hands helps in giving more power and its really helpful while hitting a clutch shot

This is the best analysis I've read of Lonzo's shot. As I've said elsewhere you simply cannot get consistency shooting the way he does. You're timing has to be dead on to shot well using these mechanics and that kills your consistency. His performance as a pro shows this. My guess is he changes it after the current season. If not he will never be a good shooter.

His brother shoots odd (LaMelo) too. He brings the ball up from his stomach/chest area and catapults the ball at an angle. I feel Lonzo will struggle creating space in the NBA with bigger, stronger defenders. You should do Malik Monk

I see people saying "why fix it if it still goes in"? Well, the only reason it was going in is because the defense in college is weaker.

As expected, he can't buy a basket with that funky ass shot in the NBA. Lakers need to sit him down and fix that. Fast.
