How Kosovo Became Independent from Serbia 🇽🇰

Kosovo declared independence from Serbia on February 17, 2008. This move followed years of ethnic tensions and conflict. In the late 1990s, Kosovo, predominantly Albanian, sought autonomy from Serbia, triggering a violent response. The Kosovo War in 1999 led to NATO intervention, where NATO bombed Serbia, and the establishment of a UN administration. Over time, negotiations failed to reach a consensus on Kosovo's status. In 2008, Kosovo's leaders unilaterally declared independence, citing a desire for self-determination. While recognized by many countries, including the United States and major European nations, Serbia opposes it. The complex historical and ethnic context, coupled with international involvement, shaped Kosovo's path to independence. And did you know that in the Kosovar capital of Pristina there is a statue of former US president Bill Clinton?

That war was illegal - by un statutes as NATO is a defensive alliance and Serbia did not attack any NATO member

Half the world opposes it. not just Serbia. And why is Vojvodina shown? It's like showing Bavaria in Germany... Kosovo is not a member of the UN. Without Serbia's consent, it will never be.

I really don't inderstand why the land swap deal is so opposed by the international community. Both sides are agreeable to it and then both countries could put the current situation behind them and move forward.

Kosovo* is not an independent country but a NATO military base/protectorate. As far as the deeper historical context is concerned, Albanians only started to settle this province with the Ottoman occupation. They even use the Serbian name (derived from the toponym Kosovo polje) because they don't have their own.
