Mama Chat - When you get started homeschooling and it all goes wrong.

We started back to homeschooling and well it feels like it is a hot mess. Here is my day 2 of back to homeschooling

I am a little flair of fun and crazy with 6 kids. We homeschool and try to keep ourselves in budget for life. I am constantly asked how I do it, so here it is. Here is a window into our life, I hope that it either makes you smile or helps you out.

I put an alarm clock in each kid’s bedroom and taught the older ones how to use them. They are expected to have breakfast and be in the school room by 8:30 am. It has been fantastic. We’ve been finished by lunch (12:30-1PM).

Similar to what someone else said, by 9am sharp everyone is supposed to have animal chores done, eat breakfast, not have pjs on, and sitting where we do school. We do a devotional, pray, and start the day.

Denison Math is so awesome at helping struggling math students. You watch videos with him, he has you take notes. My son finally understands the concepts and is feeling confidence in doing it. He also has a success series for children who have learning difficulties. He is awesome. I cried when my son finally was getting math.

My husband passed away in July and out of our 7 children I'm still homeschooling 4. I had my mom on hospice for a year and in my home just prior to my husband's passing. We have pretty much done no homeschooling since January 2022. I am still trying to catch up with everyday life and trying to find a way to finally start back to a regular homeschooling schedule.

My sister would have a nursing baby and 6 other kids and drag them all to mass at 7am M-F just to force them to get up, get dressed, eat and brush teeth. It was her sanity. She said otherwise it would be noon and no one brushed teeth or got dressed.

I do littlest grades to biggest with my 5 kids. It’s one after another, they know the order and when they are up next. Works very well! No one fights me, they like the 1:1 attention and they know they have to be ready by their time with me. All except one are done by lunch. The biggest one gets her time during the toddler nap. I can’t teach the herd…it’s too chaotic.

The only thing I remember is doing in High School Geometry was watching West Side Story. My teacher literally taught for 1 year then quit. A waste of my time!

Oh we alternate too!! We do a few things each day, and then specific subjects m-f

Sunday is science and art
monday is personal development
Tuesday is Plutarch
Wednesday is BSA
Thursday is Shakespeare
Friday is "the personal MBA"
Saturday is religious study

Daily we do bible, math, hand writing, history, grammar

One of my high school kids asked if he could do an online curriculum. He’s tired of hearing me talk. 😂 He is an introvert so I think it might work well him. Any suggestions? We have been doing CC for years.
