That particular safe stopped being Liberty’s property the second it was purchased by the consumer. They have NO RIGHT to give away the information required to access the contents.

I bought a harbor freight safe and in the manual it says “DO NOT lose your keys! We do not create or provide backup passcodes for any reason under any circumstances for your protection!”

Liberty safe just proved they need to go out of biz. The employees should be outraged that this is possible.

This is why I went with a mechanical dial lock that I set my own code. I work in IT so I don't trust any electronics. There are always backdoors, intentional or not.

Not only did Liberty safes give access to Nathan's safe but likely all Liberty gun safes. If they just gave the FBI the code, instead of having a Liberty Safe employee open it for them, then the FBI now has access code to all Liberty gun safes. Disgusting.

A safe is only as secure as its passcode. They should have told the FBI to cut the safe open. It was never their problem. But it sure is now.

You buy a safe to protect your property from criminals. There is no bigger criminal than the government.

Here’s what I sent to Liberty.

I’m shocked to hear the news that you are giving codes to the FBI. This is a complete violation of trust! As such, I am requesting a dial lock conversion kit to replace my electronic lock and I expect this to be covered by warranty since the security of my safe has been violated by your irresponsible decisions. If I am wrong about the security of my Liberty Safe, please let me know. Upon conformation I will provide you a shipping address.

I don't care if they change their 'policy'. It should not have a backdoor and you only get ONE chance Liberty. You blew it, One and Done!

So every Liberty safe owner needs to receive damages plus a complete refund and Bill to keep her safe is not safe is no longer safe! What law firm is going to pick this up for a giant class-action lawsuit come on!!

They don't need to change their policies they need to go out of business.

You never agree to a search. Of your car, house, etc. Force them to get a warrant. The moment you give any type of permission, the warrant requirement is gone.

For perspective - this is similar to hiring a Handyman to replace the locks in your home for safety concerns keeps a copy of a key for himself. You know, just in case the government asks him for it....

First, no company should ever volunteer their customers anything to anyone.

Second, not speed bumping law enforcement is the least of our issues in this department. You'd be appalled if it was generally known what info every cell provider proactively gives out.

The Big question is why is there a back door code to anyone’s safe to begin with?

Welp, guess Liberty Gun Safes is on my no-buy list. Too bad, was looking for a new safe. Eff em.

Bro. I was a deputy district attorney for the county of San Bernardino when that terrorist attack took place, and knew one of the individuals killed that day. Apple DID know how to get into the phone, they just wouldn't. Here is an excerpt from their statement: "Building a version of iOS that bypasses security in this way would undeniably create a backdoor. And while the government may argue that its use would be limited to this case, there is no way to guarantee such control." Additionally, the phone used by the terrorist was issued to him by the County of San Bernardino (he was an employee of the County), and was the property of the County. As in EVERY electronic device issued to us, we were made abundantly aware that we had no privacy right in the information we stored on that phone. So Apple COULD have assisted the Government in it's investigation into a bona fide terrorist attack on American soil, but chose to support terrorists instead. This is why I will NEVER support Apple or purchase a single Apple device again.

Rather than getting a second warrant specifically for the safe---once it was discovered--law enforcement simply thought it would be easier to call up Liberty Safe and see if the company could give the agents access instead. Liberty Safe's compliance was completely voluntary on that score, and that is why the company is getting flamed right now.

I am in the market for a high end gun safe and was deciding between a Liberty and a Vault Pro. Thanks for making me aware of this. I will NOT be buying a Liberty safe. If I OWN the safe, I do not want another way for someone else to open it. Duh!!!

Ok so I can answer some questions here, since I work in the industry on the technician side. Most of your electronic locks have the ability to be programmed with a master reset code as well as a master or managerial code. These codes should only be used EXCLUSIVELY with an actual safe and vault technician; not police or FBI because this would compromise installed locks out in the field. I don't know how Liberty or any other company does their combos but I would assume it's categorized by serial numbers of the lock (probably only affecting locks within a certain number range).

The reason electronic locks have the ability to be programmed this way is for 2 reasons; lost combos and user errors. If a safe is locked shut and the electronic lock has failed, or the combos do not work, a tech would have to drill the safe and destroy the electronic lock. Having a programmed code avoids destroying the UL listing, damaging the safe, destroying the lock; the safe can be opened in seconds and able to be serviced with that code.

IMPORTANT PART

If you don't want anyone to have a backdoor to your safe, get a mechanical combo lock. It's EMP proof, it takes no batteries, they are built like a tank, they last FOREVER 🤣

Just remember to have your combo changed by a professional when you get it home and installed. If you lost your combo on a mechanical lock, there are ways to get that safe open with minimal damage and without destroying the lock. Less mess, less to repair, re-use the lock.

IMO backdoor codes should ONLY be given to security professionals who work on safes and vaults, not even your standard locksmith.

If you have more questions, feel free to ask and I will answer what I can 😁
