I just went through and read the comments, I think part of the problem is our deck collecting is a social outlet, we see others get them and like them and want to have that connection with our youtube tarot friends...there are times when I watch a video and shuffle the deck I see on the video while watching...fun to have the deck someone on social media is working with and see what similar or dissimilar - happen. So it's pretty social, and even though many of us are very hermit-like, we are after all...human. Also, some of it is the excitement of wanting, waiting, and getting...and has little to do with the having. So we see a deck, it looks pretty, want it because out "friend" has one, feel the excitement of it's coming in the mail! and then we unwrap, shuffle through it, and never touch it again. I am a collector of many things. My family thinks my collections are a bit unreasonable, but I like the things. For a while I sold some of them...but it's fun to learn about a thing, like say: vintage china. Then search for it, find it for cheap and acquire a full service for six. Now, I have many decks that I love, some that I use rarely, and I recently put mine all in a system of drawers that are behind cabinet doors (I think my landlord built it for vhs tapes) I am aggravated when I have to uncover and dig out the decks, but it doesn't make me want to get rid of them...I don't need to have everything cleared out...I want to have my things...like a dragon sitting on a mountain of treasure I guess...so I have just been a bit more discerning about what I adopt. I will say, there have been a few things I sold when I had my etsy shop going...that I wish I had back. They are pretty rare, and I don't see them around (very pricey vintage rhinestone jewelry) so that is how I proceed with the whole deck collecting thing. Maybe stay off social media for a month..see if it makes a difference. The decks you are getting rid of...don't seem that irreplaceable...love your bags.

I finally culled my first haul of 12 decks a month ago when I had 70+ Tarot decks. Now, I'm down to 40+ decks and still in the process of culling more!

Once you start and develop an internal dialogue and find out the "why" you collect Tarot decks, it gets easier! I realized I've been yearning to become intimate again with learning Tarot, instead of looking for the next pretty deck. My mental focus had to shift as well as my heart and soul.

For me, I have been very strict and picky with decks I buy from now on. For example, I want to buy decks that are VERY close to the Waite-Smith tradition, classic popular decks, and decks with art that are close to "Marvel/DC" comics. This is what brings me joy. Also, I must watch videos of these decks and spend a week discerning and meditating if I need the deck instead of pressing the "buy" button on the website as an impulse. I must NEED it, not just want it.

When I realized this, it was so easy for me to cull away! I felt better knowing my decks were going to be rehomed. The stress of having too many vibeless decks went away, and I started to appreciate the decks that were left behind. The consumerism of Tarot decks is a very difficult "Devil card" to release the chains from...

Thank you for this. I’m looking at culling my collection too. My problem is the same: lack of space in my 900 sq.ft. house. I can only keep so many in my studio, and the rest are boxed up in the basement. I like the idea of asking the deck if it wants to stay or go, but I think I’ll use my pendulum instead of cards. There are only 3 possible answers, yes, no, or maybe.

I moved from Pennsylvania to Florida and I didn't trust the moving company to move my cards....they could get I loaded up some totes and put them in my car...!! it took up most of the car...!! so you aren't alone...!

I have somewhat over 200 also...and it does create a feeling of “pressure.” I’m thinking of getting a couple of boxes and just put decks I’m not using in the closet. When I think of buying one...pull one of those. 😆

I can relate to this so hard. This is where I am at with my release year and I am finding letting go of decks waaaay harder than I thought it would be. Like you, I've tried all sorts of ideas and systems but I am still struggling.

Thank you for sharing your experiences with this, I feel less alone in the issue of overwhelm with my deck collection.

Just to clarify... the Marie Kondo “does it spark joy” question is not about rationalizing if you “like it, ” it’s about looking and holding the item and recognizing how your body and heart instantly react. If you grab your favorite deck of all time — it’s that instant “YES” feeling. If you practice her method than every deck you keep should have that— no hesitation, no in-your-head-rationalizing... Just that instant fizzy feeling of something you adore. The immediate smile it gives you, the leap of the heart in joy! Not the rationalizing mind of “oh this is really pretty and I meant to use it one day...” That kind of thinking is essentially a mental trap. Most of the things “I mean to use this one day” never end up getting used and Kondo talks more about that and how to approach sentimental items etc. I definitely recommended reading Kondo’s whole book if you haven’t. She explains it and the art (and relief) of decluttering much better than I.

In the fall I took a bunch of decks to my local metaphysical shop and they assessed them for store credit. I was nervous about it because I did love many of them once and wanted them to have good homes ... well the next day I came in to pick up my store credit the lady told me every one of my decks had already found new homes! One buyer especially had fallen in love with an indie deck I had. Hearing these stories, I can’t tell you how happy this made me. Because otherwise they were just collecting dust with me. If you think of it with that perspective it really helps.

Thanks for sharing your experience.

Oh girl, the struggle is REAL and the problem I've had is that I rehomed decks that I had back in the 90's and just ended up missing them for one reason or another and RE-acquired them. Just today I realized I really miss having The Wild Unknown in my Tarot collection - traded it last year. I think there are just some decks that shaped my practice and, even if I don't reach for them a lot, I just find that they're still a part of my journey and I treasure the role they have had to play and may play again. Most of the time, the decks I end up selling or trading are hard nopes for one reason or another. The in-betweens, as you said, are MUCH harder!!

I hear ya! I've culled something like 60-70 decks since last June. I talk a bit about the process in my depth year videos, but I've really honed my taste in and use for decks. Thanks for the ramble and nice to see you! 🙏🏼💕😊

I'm struggling too. I'm procrastinating. Perhaps I'll do a VR hmmm thanks for sharing your struggles. I've managed to sell two decks so far and I feel ok with those so far, but the build up to being able to let them go is tough. Tough, tough, tough.

Was interested in the Brian froud faerie deck but I don't even see it on your video anymore. Lol..

I have slowed WAY down in purchasing decks because I'm also worried I'll start to get overwhelmed...at least until I have a chance to work with what I have. But I am slowly creating a "ready to go" pile so I can start to weed out what I know I'm not really called to use. Thanks for sharing your struggle. It's real, for sure!

Ahh the paradox of choice... As a newcomer to tarot, I thought I only needed one deck but then I started buying a few different ones and realised they all contributed something different to my learning. However, there are some I knew just didn't work for me. I realised that I was more happy knowing they would go somewhere they could be used and loved in a way I couldn't. One of the things my grandma once told me about money but I think can be applied in this instance is this: the more you have, the more you should share or give so you don't get bloated and your good fortune may turn to stagnant energy. 2020 is the year you release all this good stuff into the universe! Good luck! You can do this!!

This is why I appreciate people like you who do deck flipthroughs because you save me from having shelves rammed full of stuff. I have specific decks for specific purposes. I have 2 tarot decks and 6 oracle decks on my desk and I don't want or need any more. I have 2 oracle decks in a drawer - one is my first deck which is just way too basic for me now (sea soul blessings) and not very helpful. And the Caroline Myss archetypes. Which is a bit of a regret - I HATE the cardstock - it's so shiny the cards stick together, the cards are fugly and i don't get how to use them and they're enormous. There are plenty of decks I'm like 'ooh pretty' over but I don't need to own them so can admire from afar.

I enjoyed listening to this :) I am still fairly new to tarot - only 6 months in and I have 14 decks already. I am already starting to consider buying intentionally as my problem is feeling like I do not have enough time to dedicate to learning each deck intimately if I just keep buying. I decided to write down the top 5 decks that I want to purchase for the year and will try my best to stick to that! LOL!! Tarot is a very personal practice and I can totally resonate with the feeling of each deck representing a piece of your soul - I feel the same way about mine. Thanks for sharing your journey xxx

Oh my gosh, I was laughing and smiling and nodding and agreeing with you! My solution was to put the ones I definitely don't want to keep in an easy access box and only put a few up for sale/swap at a time. I give myself time and permission to visit the others in the box and allow myself to change my mind. If I'm ambivalent about a deck, it stays. I keep a few popular decks on hand for swapping if a deck comes up on the trading sites that I want.

I soooo connect to this struggle! It’s nice to see you (eventually) found a system that works for you! At the end that is what is important! Decks do have energy of their own and it helps me at least get into a different state of mind, which I need when Ireach for a certain deck! The struggle is very real 😅! Thank you for sharing this!

My collection is smaller, and I can still relate SO hard to what you say in this video! Thank you for sharing your experiences. I think I might do a VR!
