Trump's proposed tariffs: Walmart may have to raise prices, CFO says | LiveNOW from FOX

President-elect Trump's plan to impose tariffs has been viewed as a tax on consumers or a necessary step to protect the U.S. economy, depending on who you ask.

Trump argues that high tariffs are needed to reward domestic manufacturers and punish foreign companies. Meanwhile, many economists argue that tariffs are simply a tax on imports ultimately paid by American consumers.

Walmart, the nation's largest retailer, is now suggesting that prices on some of its products could increase if tariffs rise.

LiveNOW's Andrew Craft spoke about the impact tariffs could have on the U.S. economy with Anthony Esposito, the President & CEO of Island Capital Investments.

Andrew Craft and Anthony Esposito also discussed Trump's selection of Howard Lutnick as Commerce Secretary and who the president-elect may nominate for Treasury Secretary.

Walmart makes entirely too much money as is. Perhaps the CEO, CFO, and other elite management needs to take a pay cut!!

These comments are funny. People have no idea how many things we don't actually make here. Blanket tariffs are going ro raise the prices of everything, including medications. Im going to laugh so hard when maga finds out.

If we were to guesstimate the number of Trump voters who shop at Walmart based on available demographics we learn that:

• Walmart’s U.S. customer base: Around 240 million visits per week, with a large percentage of those shoppers from rural and suburban areas. Walmart shoppers are generally more representative of middle- and lower-income Americans, who formed a significant part of Trump’s voting base.

• Trump voter base: In 2020, Trump received approximately 74 million votes. A large portion of these voters were rural and suburban residents, overlapping with Walmart’s key customer demographics.

Given these factors, it’s reasonable to estimate that tens of millions of Trump voters are Walmart shoppers, likely somewhere in the range of 30–50 million. This estimate reflects both the scale of Walmart’s customer base and its demographic alignment with Trump voters.

2/3 of Trump voters just voted against their own best interests!!!

A lot of people are saying "we'll just buy American" (forgetting that there's things you simply can't get from America due to climate or resources) or "bring back mom & pops". I agree, bring back mom & pops. I moved from Alabama to Scotland and being back in a country with Mom & Pops is great.

But I can tell you from firsthand experience, it is more expensive than bigger brand stores. Out of principle, I go to mom & pop stores, but I can afford to. Many Americans do not have that luxury.

So the next thing you better fight for is a living wage for everyone to bring wages back in line with inflation. Maybe also that 70% tax we used to put on multibillion dollar corporations that fuelled the 1950s-1960s way of life. Then fight to reduce inflation by restructing corporate greed. Do all three things and mom & pops will become viable again.

"MAY have to raise prices" with the keyword being MAY. But if it gets a lot of this toxic Chinese junk off store shelves, it's worth it.

7:50 Twos things: For the interviewer, that was a hard sell on a hypothetical scenario that ignores reality.

Second, China and over countries that import their goods to the US don’t “eat those prices.” Tariffs trickle down to customers, that’s an undeniable truth.

That’s all. Have a good night.

If Walmart went back to Sam Walton's made in America policy it wouldn't matter. Prices are above local stores on a lot especially meat anyway!

Let’s say that these large franchises close down and more Mom and Pop stores open up. How many of you would be willing to pay the expensive prices they charge in order to keep their doors open? There’s a reason why not many people go to farmers markets. It’s because it’s too expensive for many people living in the inner cities.I’m all for American industry. But often times it’s too expensive . Secondly if there’s a blanket tariff for the whole world then they’re not just gonna “eat that”. The people who will be paying for it in the end will be us.
