Could you do this style video for all the decades too? Like the 70s, 80s etc. think that would be super interesting to see the music evolve over time

“World Without Love” was written by Lennon and McCartney, as was “Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da.” Even a Stone’s early hit “I Wanna Be Your Man” was written by Lennon/McCartney, which speaks even more to their songwriting domination.

The 60's seem so special to me. There was such a good mix of music making it to the top of the charts. There's soul, blues, rock n roll and more. The quality of song writing and vocals just feels so warm. There's a lot of talented musicians around today but the 60's just feels like the perfect mixing pot of fun and talent

How extraordinary and outstanding The Beatles have been you just realize when you hear them in the context of their time.

Every time a Beatles song comes on in this video I feel like my kid just won an award and it makes me so happy and feel like my best friends accomplished something.

Fun fact: The Beatles are the only band in history to occupy the entire top 5 on the billboard hot 100.

One of the crazies things about the Beatles is honestly how incredibly short their careers were, and how much insanely memorable and incredible songs are in their catalog. Just check how long they were making songs, it was not long at all. Yet the amount of incredible songs... Just unmatched. It is actually crazy

No, the Monkees always sang all the vocals themselves. Michael Nesmith was allowed to write and play guitar on one or 2 songs an album. The band members later fought for and won control over the recording of music, and had several hits after they started playing their own instruments. They also toured and played their own instruments on stage starting before the studio fight.

When the Beatles came on, you said “start of an era”… so true. Really, those four lads dominated charts even up through 1983. A nearly 20 year era, counting dominating the charts as solo artists. Then one more smash hit in 1987.

The Beatles had even more hits than you realize...A World Without Love, performed by Peter and Gordon, was written by Paul McCartney. Ob-La-Di-Ob-La-Da, covered by Marmalade, written by Paul McCartney (and also performed by the Beatles, of course).

*Fun Fact*
House of the Rising Sun was recorded in one single take.

So many good songs & memories from my childhood. Dad playing this music on his giant late 80's/early 90's stereo setup, Grandparents always having 60's music on the radio, many a vacation road trip spent listening to 60's music, swimming & picnics at the local wave pool with oldies playing over the speakers. Thanks for the warm & nostalgic trip down memory lane Joel!

1960's to 1980's are the perfect eras of music to use samples. It just has something else to it.

Joel - you need to read the rest of the article. The Monkees did sing on their records but were not allowed to play instruments. They protested and eventually were allowed to contribute to the instruments, songs and vocals and eventually toured.

Thank you for reminding me why I was obsessed with The Beatles as a teenager - their music is just incredible! 🤩

My whole body wanted to explode during that misinformation about The Monkees. Yes they were former for the TV show seeking actors who were musically interested I believe, two of the members being more actorish - Davy Jones (not a pirate) and Micky Dolez, while two were actually musicians - Mike Nesmith and Peter Tork. Davy was the dreamboat tambourine guy and did actually sing quite a bit, for example Daydream Believer. Micky actually learn to play drums for his role and while he might not be the mightiest drummer he has one of my favourite voice of all time, singing I’m A Believer and many other great songs, I think She is a good example, and when he did write lyrics I really like them for example Mommy and Daddy being about his native american heritage. So yea, other people were hired to record the music. This however made both Mike and Peter mad since they were really musicians, Mike did manage to get about one or two songs per album though, if it’s country it’s Mike. I do very much belive they played their own music during tours! They did get fed up though and got themselves creative freedom with Headquarters which Mickey has stated is his favourite album for that reason. The band lived on a few years but quarrels broke them up, but there has been reunions, sadly Mike recently passed, making Mickey the last Monkee standing. Mike’s book Infinite Tuesday delves into this a lot futher. I hope you can appreciate the band just half as much as I do, I think they’re neat and wrote a paper on them for music class like a year ago, if you’re really interested I could share it (it’s in Swedish)

This might be wrong but I think they’re the only band in history to have four albums be number one in one year - ’67
Yours sincerely, a Monkeemaniac

PS this video is only strengtening my Beatles + 60s relapse, thank you

I can finally see why The Beatles were so huge. Compared to the songs before them, they were revolutionary and completely changed the way music sounded since. A valuable video, Joel!

Had the great privilege of meeting Paul McCartney whilst working in his studio. What a musician and what a thoroughly nice chap. Another great compilation mate. Keep it up.

The Monkees most definitely sang on all their records. Mike Nesmith was a song writer. Peter Tork was a very proficient musician.

The Monkees did their own singing. After the first two albums they kicked out Don Kirschner and took over, including the playing of the instruments. Headquarters, their third album, is the first totally produced by them.
