Plaque is a soft, sticky and colourless substance that adheres to the tooth surface. This is formed by the combination of the food particles and the bacteria. So if this plaque is not removed regularly, it forms into calculus. Calculus is a hard substance that is formed by the mineralisation of the plaque. Sometimes when the deposition of the calculus is too much, it just gets detached from the tooth surface and many at times it is mistaken as the tooth surface itself. So it is very important to reduce the formation of the plaque itself is that the calculus formation is stopped, The very plaque structure should be destroyed so that the calculus should not be formed so brushing and other oral hygiene like using of a mouthwash, interdental cleansing aids, food modification, consumption of a good healthy diet is very important even for the maintenance of oral hygiene. Consumption of micro refined foods like pizzas and burgers contribute to the formation of the plaque. As they are formed, plaque and calculus destroys the tissues surrounding the teeth and the tooth is lost much earlier at a young age.
