If B is a subset of V then span(B) is a vector subspace. then what is the span of the empty set?

The definition is weird and confusing, although it makes sense. Why do you want the linear combinations to be finite? Why not just say that B in V is finite since V is finite? That would immediately knock off "infinite" linear combinations.
