Mizuhiki (水引) is an ancient Japanese art form that uses a special cord. Meaning for the good wish presents.

History
The cord is created from rice paper, that is tightly wound, starched to give it stiffness, and then colored. The ways of coloring include brightly colored Mylar (a very thin plastic), thin strands of silk, or simply painted. The art form was used to tie up the hair of the samurai.

Currently there are several forms. The traditional decoration, given away at Japanese occasions, such as weddings, births, and funerals take the forms of animals or boats. Different animals are created for different meanings, including cranes, frogs, fish, dragons, and turtles are among the most popular. The other traditional way the art is done is in decorating cards with little colored knots, similarly to how people in western cultures use a ribbon and bow. A third way is being developed that uses the ancient art for a more modern purpose, jewelry.

Thank you, this is really lovely. I tied it using red nylon twine and it worked well. The rock is going to be the "bow" on a birthday present for a friend. She's going to think I'm so clever. :o) I'll be sure to give credit to you. Thanks

Ok, this is really an amazing how to video, but the author does not answer questions about where to obtain supplies??? Am I missing something?

I know this is an old vid but I couldn't watch it after the first 3 minutes. Watching the struggle of trying to hold the straps, wrap them, pull them through holes and repeatedly not being able to do it, the music, everything was very tense or at least made me feel tense. It is a beautiful finished product but I wouldn't have the patience. I would have hot glued the first piece to the back of the rock temporarily to free up my hands. It seemed so stressful.

Love the project but the music was not zen.

Remove everything from the background on the table so we just see clearly the rock, the cane and the tweezers. There is too much visual "noise" going on.
