Originally, the new build was on a GNR J50 locomotive but it got cancelled and was switched to LNER P2 No. 2007 Prince of Wales instead

I wonder why they never went to a 4-8-4 wheel arrangement? The NZR "K" class mixed traffic locomotive had a grate the same size on narrow gauge 3'6", so there could be even more power, and a more secure ride.

LNER P2 Cock’o The North was originally going to be built as a replica of the original P2 class in streamlined form with a Gresley A4 and using Gresley motion. But the project was abandoned, so it was switched to the current LNER P2 Prince of Wales instead
