In the video I take a look at how to get the "LOATHE' sound. In particular the way they combine Shoegaze and metal. So this video shows what type of Baritone Guitar to use, the tuning, and then the type of guitar processing you can apply to get that sound

I like how Loathe released one of the most aggressive Deftones albums. Joking aside, "I let it in and it took everything" is a metal masterpiece.

Another band called Holy Fawn do a very nice job of blending metal tones with Shoegaze as well. They're a seriously underrated band that everyone should check out at least once

I see how shoegaze and metal can go well together since theyre both about volume to some extent

Tips: use bridge cables as guitar strings

The Squier Bass VI is almost identical to this guitar and gets the job done as well for anyone that’s interested in this sound. Same 30 inch scale length and use strings 90-20 like Erik does. I also believe that he swaps out the 90 low string for a 105 bass string. Definitely look into it

They combine their hardcore roots into massive Deftones influence with a more metallic twist. It's so fucking wicked

No fuckin' way did I just find a South African metal youtube channel. Fuck yeah bro! Subbed.

Edit: Bonus points for Loathe btw

This is exactly the kind of content I'm always looking for! Great video! Since it's so hard to find those baritone jazzmasters, I've been considering one of those SubZero VI baritones and then just putting the appropriate pickups in it for this sound.

Okay, I love the sound... but jeez guys, _that_ progression is so similiar to "Back to School" :)

My favorite metal- ish shoegaze still comes from Iroha (Birmingham UK), guys from the Final, Jesu, Godflesh circle of people.
They are no more, the follow up Khost is way more brutal / industrial. God, i loved Iroha. Great lesson Gary, thank you.

Subbed. Great video.

Listening to the last track (same name as album) and a couple of riffs sounded so dense and heavy that I assumed they had sourced a fretless baritone. Imagine the abyss a fretless baritone could create.

A fun little thing i think i found ks that playing loathe through the Fortin Nameless X suite by Neural DSP is that it sounds really nice. Turn up the presence to around 7, lows about 6.5, mids and highs at 8 and 7 kinda range, etc, usual eq nonsense, cut off must everything above 10kHz (baritone so we can cut a tonne of highs easily), usual steps. Noise gate to taste, bit of the grind pedal, and we’re laughing ❌ Sceaming ✅. Dial back the gain, and you’e got a tone for screaming and is it really you

That random fade in the middle of the video started freaking me out. Thought I was having a stroke.

Damn...excellent work my dude. My ear doesn't pick up those chords as well as yours does. I've been slowly making my way through A Sad Cartoon. Nice work!

Great stuff. My guitar teacher from 1998 would have had a cow with that thumb mute. Haha .
