One Thursday in Jerusalem
Christ gathered the disciples to Him
Having supper in the upper room
He told them what was coming soon

He said, “I will be crucified
and die and rise To my Father above me
Take this bread and drink this cup
Yeah do this in remembrance of Me”

Throughout all of Orthodoxy
At each and every liturgy
We eat this supper once again
In the life-giving cup of Communion

Jesus said, “Whoever eats My flesh
Whoever drinks My blood
Abides in Me and I in Him”
United in the love of God

It starts as simple wine and bread
But oh when certain prayers are said
The Spirit will descend on us
And make it the flesh and blood of Jesus

Although we are unworthy
Yet God allows us to partake
Of the Mystical Eucharistic
Holy Mystery that is the sacred Communion

Confession and fasting and prayer
That’s how the Orthodox prepare
To taste the holy Bread of Life
That joins us to the Body of Christ

May it take our sins away
And grant us everlasting life
Let us draw near with faith and fear and love
Step up and open wide
