Experimental Film Studio Brand Identity Process

Some stories aren’t meant to be easily understood. Signal 404 is a film studio brand identity built for those who embrace the obscure, the thought-provoking, and the unexplained. In this video, I take you through my branding process, crafting a visual identity that feels as enigmatic as the films this studio would produce.

This isn’t just about logo design—it’s about building a brand design with depth, one that doesn’t reveal everything at first glance. From the dark aesthetic to the typography choices, every element of this identity reflects the studio’s core philosophy: films that make you think.

🔹 What you’ll see in this video:

- Brand discovery
- Creating a brief
- Choosing the right visual direction
- Creating a logo that's authentic to the brand
- Bring the brand identity to life

If you love experimental branding, indie film aesthetics, and design that challenges expectations, this project is for you. Come with me to design a unique brand identity.

I really liked the stylescapes section. What a clever idea to create three distinct looks to get a feel for what the client likes and to open up some creative possibilities.

This turned out so well! I was screaming at the screen for you to choose option 2 as it was by far the most interesting as a starting point. I'm so glad you went with your gut! I know how weird it can be to have the vague sense of "other designers will judge me" looming in the back of your brain, but I think usually the one that excites you is always going to be the most interesting execution. I especially love the way those posters turned out! Very cool.

I just gotta say thanks for your advice. I commented on your channel two months ago, and since then I gained 10k subscribers. I've been thinking about this channel and interestingly use it as inspiration in my product designs. I love your videos and thanks again!

My personal most important takeaway from this video is that I should start making stylescapes even if it's just for myself. I don't know why, but I always assume it's gonna be a waste of time, that I better spend this time on coming up with ideas or research and that I should just keep a whole vision in my head. Seeing your process I can't help but thinking how it actually can make the whole thing easier and clear.

I was so happy you chose to explore 2nd logo, I liked it a lot! And I think you're right that maybe a real client wouldn't be bold enough to choose it, but that's why it's so fun to see it even as a concept.

Don't want to be too impudent, but would you consider making a video focusing more on process of generating ideas? If it's even possible, I know we can't get into another person's head, it's just seem impossible for me sometimes, to come up with anything I mean
(Sorry for huge comment)

Great Brand Identity process driven content video. I slightly liked the first concept more at first, but then after you explained your choices (also often part of a client presentation, the discuss of the choice and why) it made much more sense. Initially brands that lack the depth in the craft are often easily copied by other less original or daring designers... so making a solid concept come to life is much more beneficial to the client. So again, great work!

I like this logo alot. Super minimal but super flexible. It feels Akin to how A24 does their marketing and design which is pretty on the money what your film studio concept was. Love your videos man appreciate the time you take to drop these. Also killer Knocked Loose poster ❤

I have loved the video, the thought process being explained just made sense, but the one thing I kept noticing was the keyboard you use. It looks awesome, do you mention where it came from in previous vids or would you have links for it?

Hi Austin,
Great video! I'm launching my business soon, and your videos have been incredibly helpful — you're a great inspiration!
I just have a quick question: the photos you use to illustrate your stylescapes and brand guidelines — where do you find them? Are they free to use, and how do you manage that?
Greetings from France, and keep up the amazing work!
