Boy that sounds good! Crisp, tight big bore...

My father had one (porting and head work along with a full aftermarket odd named exhaust) when I was younger and it was insanely fast. Had the more squared off back fender. Fast-forward years later (i was in my early twenties, now 41) i bought a 83 RM 500. Loved that bike and regret selling it to this very day.

This may be hard to fathom for young riders but Suzuki RMs of that era were generally the best bikes made, along with YZs of that era. CRs had made a lot of progress by 1980 and KXs were just starting to become great. I owned several RMs (an 80, 100, two 125s), and a CR250, and my friends had RMs and YZs from those years. The Japanese bikes had taken over by the mid ‘70s and Suzuki really took over in ‘76 the year the RM was introduced and kept that lead, especially the 125s for many years, and some years the big bores. I’m not taking sides, I love the big 4 Japanese bikes as if they were American bikes. I do wish Suzuki had a reason to lead again today in motocross. It seems like when the 2 stroke died, Suzuki lost interest.

Finally. Someone who can warm up and ride a 2stroke the PROPER WAY
You don’t need to sit there and piss rev it every 3 seconds

Twin shock, big bore air hammers are one of my all time favorites. My only negative was that 4 speed gear box on the RM.

I had one. The power was narrow and signed off early. Hated the 4 speed. Handled good though. Raced it once then got rid of it.

A friend had one in the late '90s....put a makeshift base gasket from the wrong material on it. It would lean out without warning frequently, like going full throttle on its own to ride. I had an RM465 which I found to be the worst desert bike on the planet...only slightly better than a Harley in the rolling woops. Stadium oriented geometry on the 465 didn't like sand at all....
