The loose crumbly material under the leaves in the woods is worm castings.
I produce the same thing in my yard with leaves or grasses, weeds, other materials and the worms move in and soon it looks just like what I find in the woods.
I get the same results when I put a piece of plywood on the lawn for a few days and the worms are under it working on the grasses and whatever other plant matter under it.

Many years ago I realized that there's a lot of gardening information that sounds sensible but ends up being a waste of time.

I realized that the only way for me to determine if any advice is worthy is to do my own trials. I have many raised beds and I am able to reserve two of them for my trials. In each of these beds I grow identical varieties of veggies. In one bed, as in my usual practice, I lay down about and inch or two of homemade compost at the end of each growing season. In the other bed, I will follow the advice that I am testing.

Among the many trials I've done over the years, I tested this one, a.k.a. compost tea. There was no noticeable difference between the two beds. I got the same results in other trials where I applied various other forms of "garden teas".

When you do trials like, it not only shows you whether a particular method works, it also gives you a good idea of the amount of additional effort and costs involved.

I'm not saying this particular approach won't work for everyone but it didn't work for me in these conditions.

I started looking into this world because of chilli peppers. I started growing them when I was at home due to heart problems at the age of 24 when I was also left home from work because of it. God used that period to draw me closer to Himself and put "gardening" into my heart. I love nature, and I ALWAYS questioned the difficulty of gardening have always is gardening so HARD? Why do we need to do all of this stuff to our plants in our gardens when things just thrive in nature without us doing a damn thing to them?"

Why do we need to apply this fertilizer at this time, and then this fertilizer at that time, and then we need to spray stuff on them to keep bugs and stuff away etc,

Newby gardener here. Excellent post, you fully explained 3 important questions in two posts. Potash making and use, and microbial health with the use of the forrest tea. The 3rd is more an observation, it seems garden supply companies are selling the various elements in a separated form, then we try to put them all together. Nature has already done so and probably far more efficiently than the scientists, who have probably missed something. Thanks, my garden and I are wiser for your knowledge
