I'd love to see a top 10 by position list... best 10 loosehead props, top 10 hookers, top 10 tighthead props, top 10 front/enforcer locks, top 10 back/jumper locks, top 10 blindside.... etc.

Dan carter against the lions in 2005 was the best performance from any player

Had the privilege of seeing all these great players live one time or another. Have to say one really got me on the edge of my seat and I admire so much. Shane Williams. A legend in Wales

I am French and I love my home boys
Still there is no debate the GOAT is Sir Jonah Tali Lomu
No player has so much impact on the game - he has changed rugby over night !!!

I'm a saffa and I know it was Dan Carter. Followed by Fourie Du Preez for sheer brilliance. In the forwards, probably Richie McCaw.

I just want to give an honorable mention to David Pocock. Though his career might have been shorter than most on this list he was by far the greatest breakdown tactician ever. In fact i'm pretty sure he was responsible for IRB creating the rule that you "have to release the player" after tackling them, before entering the ruck again. Because Pocock was just turning the ball over every breakdown he was in, and even after this rule was created he was still the most dominate pilferer in rugby ever.

Impossible to compare such different positions. All great players but for me McCaw is easily and statistically the goat. World cup winning captain back to back, and over 100 tests won as captain is bradmanesque.

All-time: Gareth Edwards should certainly be here. Michael Jones, Colin Meads, Serge Blanco.... Shane Williams was very exciting, a delight to watch, but doubtful for this elite. Wlkinson was a top quality kicker, not so great as an attacking player. Dusauttoir excellent but a dubious selection too.

Richie McCaw -
The best ever at his position. Greatest overall as a leader, winner and champion.

Dan Carter:
Greatest combination of offensive & defensive skills, athletic ability, reading and controlling the game.

Jonah Lomu:
Simply the most dominant player ever.

Tim horan, phillipe sella, John eales, Victor Matfield, and Michael Jones should all be on this list. Probably a number of others as well.

Gareth Edwards head and shoulders above the rest in the non-professional era. Lomu the greatest of the professional era. With respect to Mccaw, Joost and Carter no one dominated like lomu did

Great vid. IMO you can’t really look anywhere outside of Mcaw, Lomu, Carter, Wilkinson and o’driscoll. That makes up the top five for me (not necessarily in that order.)

Part two: John Kirwan, Rory Underwood, Michael Linagh, Juan Martín Hernández, John Peter Williams, Phill Bennet, Hugo Porta, Francois Pienaard, Tana Umaga. Excellent vid, btw!

I'm a Kiwi, so (probably) biased but I have watched most All Blacks tests since the mid 1980's.
For myself, McCaw was clearly the best I have seen. Not the most talented, but the best rugby player.
His ability to continually play at a high standard in such an attritional position was remarkable, especially in the New Zealand where there is a near constant supply of new players challenging for positions, and critics calling for players' demise.
Opposition players who stood out were John Eales and George Gregan.

I think Thierry Dusautoir is the greatest the way he played in the RWC final in NZ was exceptional
