MBS Snub To Biden With OPEC+ Cut | US Says Saudi Arabia, OPEC “Aligning' With Putin Amid Ukraine War

The OPEC+ alliance of oil-exporting countries has decided to sharply cut production to support sagging oil prices. The move could deal another blow to the global economy and specially Western economies that are dependent on oil. OPEC's de-facto leader Saudi Arabia said the cut of 2 mn barrels per day was necessary to respond to rising interest rates in the West. Saudi Energy Minister Abdulaziz bin Salman stressed the group’s stated role as a guardian of stable energy markets. Oil is trading well below its summer peaks because of fears that major global economies such as the US or Europe will sink into recession. The OPEC+ decision came hours before EU agreed on new sanctions to curtail to hurt Russia's oil revenues. Biden slammed the “short-sighted” decision while the global economy reeled under “negative impact of Putin’s invasion of Ukraine”. Oil producers like Saudi Arabia have resisted calls from Biden to pump more oil to lower prices and the burden on consumers. Middle east nations, mostly close allies of Washington have refused to voice support for the US in its confrontation with Russia.

US was pressuring India to not buy oil from Russia but can't convince Gulf countries to keep oil prices in check. And this is when US provides kind of security guarantees to them but still US expects India to buy oil at 150$ per barrel.
