lmao @ the people saying "hows that racist" "he couldve just asked her ethnicity"
its about the fact that non-white ppl are just assumed to be different and therefore aside from the norm. Imagine if you were asked for your ethnicity during an interview (a PROFESSIONAL setting, not casual between friends). Whats the point of that except to profile you and create more assumptions based on what you say about yourself.

Picked this up from BBC online article (30 Nov 2022) about an elderly female aide to Queen Consort Camilla behaving EXACTLY like this at a Buckingham Palace reception.

I will love the bit when she says " musical theatre " 🤣😂🤣

It's the same in Canada. The funny thing is a lot of the white people I know were born outside of the country but no one ever asks them where they're from.

Best is when Australians tell you you're not a real Brit.

Even though our grandparents emigrated at the same time.

I think people are missing the point... She is at a job interview that shouldn't have anything to do with her race but lo and behold- it does.

When they ask first I tell them the city I’m from/live in. Lots of transplants and newcomers so for them they usually don’t meet a homegrown local so they ask “no I mean originally” I respond “right here I’m from here” and if they ask further i tell them don’t worry about it lol

I’m a native Korean and my Korean-American friend told me he gets this all the time. He’s from California but gets annoyed when he gets asked where he’s really from.
I understand why though. He was born and raised in the US, doesn’t know Korean language or culture well, and thinks like a Westerner. To me, he’s American, not Korean. And thinking he’s not American because he’s not white or black is rude.

Should see all the comments on Facebook saying “This is good because it means he doesn’t think of you as truly British which is a compliment!”

Regardless of 'what the question is', the fact remains that, in this situation (job interview), asking "Where are you from?", "Where were you born?" and "What's your heritage/ethnicity" is illegal. For any comments that are going to be along the lines of "But you need to know if someone is living there legally!", the correct question employers are allowed to ask is "Are you legally authorised to work in [country]?"

Oh, and more so than that, someone's heritage/ethnicity is none of your damn business, and if they are clearly uncomfortable talking about it with you or dodging questions, drop the damn topic.

Seems like a great interview question to weed out people who go out of their way to purposefully minsunderstand your question
