You missed one important thing of his trip back home. he didn't knew how to get home and he didn't had access to all the signals they had on the way in.
It was his first trip alone and just on healing the dog he already spent at least one week to heal himself and the dog. judging by the fact that they went on the hunt saying that they managed to survive winter and the chief even put on a bit of weight, it took them 2 weeks to get to the spot, they probably spent at least a they waiting for the boy to weak up.
Overall I think the timeline on the movie is around 6 to 8 months. mainly because by the time the boy get's home is winter already.
I absolute love this film, probably best of the year for me. It's basically The Revenant but with a wolf/dog and without Di Caprio and Tom hardy.

i really only went to see this movie because i needed a reason to hang with a friend tonight and alpha looked like the only thing interesting. never even heard of this movie and never saw the trailers so i went in completely blind but i’d say i was pleasantly surprised. it was actually pretty good. and i’m usually really impatient with movies and get bored halfway through and feel they drag on too much but this felt like the perfect length

Narrating a movie like a story line in a review.. kills the joy of watching it afresh ...Every script worth it's salt labours months on end to.visualise scenes for a superior outcome. So easy for a review to go casual about it. Felt you cud say 'some scenes took my breath away'..than depicting it pixel by pixel. Your review didn't help..at all..sorry! I stopped after 40 seconds!

I love love love this movie. As a hardcore hiker. I live in the Cascade mountains. I fish high lakes. Every season we have between 3 to 5 missing persons on the window at our local store. Seasoned hikers gone without a trace. Mother nature is unforgiving. Late season early season these mountains and the weather especially at altitude can change on a dime. End of the last ice age im guessing 4 months a year you can actually get anything done. First two months in spring would be" will i be a corpsickle after the sun goes downn". Followed by two decent months then another two of "will i be a corpsesickle by morning". I carry a big gun. Came within two steps of the largest black bear I'd even seen, by accident all alone one day. I surprised him he surprised the hell out of me. I rescued the most beautiful husky a week later. My relationship with my trail dog is something I can't put a price on. I learned having that big gun is fine but it doesn't do you much good if you don't know to have it out when it's needed. My Dog Skip (2000), Hachi, A Dog's Tale (2009) and the original Hachiko Monogatari (1987), Eight Below (2008), Dances with Wolves (1990), Marley and Me (2008). You should pretty much be on the floor sobbing by the end of all of these, if you're a dog lover.

20.000 years ago, come on !! you can't expect much in term of story .my only problem was the costume design I didn't expect to see such nice clothing, I would wear their clothes in 2018, nice jackets and boots.

Fave dog movie : has to be The the guard dogs in the Cerveteri cemetary, and then the guard dog of the housemaid....!! Fave animal movie: erm, Top 3, Mousehunt, with a cameo from Christopher Walken, Jaws, OF COURSE!!!!, and either Babe or National Velvet. Thanks.

Favorite so far has been "A Boy and his Dog" with Don Johnson.
Old and possibly tacky by today's standards.

Bought Alpha but haven't watched it yet.
Maybe it will take the title.
