Pacemakers - What can affect them? - Online interview

Generally, when people ask me how will this affect my lifestyle, I would say after the first six weeks if everything heals, you should go back to doing all the activities that you want to do. There's nothing specific that we want you to avoid; perhaps [just] avoiding some devices that might interfere with the pacemakers."

Pacemakers have the ability to greatly improve a patient's quality of life, however, it is important to know what can have a negative impact on the device. In our latest interview, highly-esteemed consultant cardiologist Dr Fu Siong Ng explains what to avoid in the weeks following the pacemaker insertion. The London-based consultant discusses what to expect once they have recovered and if patients should avoid certain devices, like household devices, mobile phones or security gates in airports, exercise, and strong electromagnetic fields.

Very informative thank you. I’ve just had my first one fit on 17/3/23 so it’s very new to me but I’ve always lived with transposition of the great vessels since birth (blue baby in 1979). I had the mustards baffle procedure by a Dr Hamilton at Myrtle street in Liverpool July 1980. They told my parents I would probably need another op by age 30 but I’m 43 now. I think my active childhood and general life maybe helped keep my heart strong.
Over the last 12 months I was getting cold very easy and breathless unnaturally. Turns out 30-35 bpm and a 2:1 heart block didn’t help 😂 Within an hour of it fitted I felt warmer and more energetic, it was an amazing feeling, like being reborn sort of.
I laugh about things because I always had a positive outlook on life.
My condition got me out of cross country running at school haha 👍🏼
Oh, I had my Percy fit at broad green in Liverpool.
I have so much praise and admiration for the NHS who have always looked after me. Sorry to go on. I have quite a physical job, I returned to work on 3/4/23, thankfully I can get help with the heavy items I wouldn’t usually think about having to move.
I’ve mastered taking my clothes off 1 armed as well 😂

Hello, I recently discovered that the long-standing advice on arm restrictions lacks a solid evidence base. It appears that these recommendations are largely based on individual doctors’ opinions, which can vary significantly. I came across a study titled “A Randomized Trial of Lenient Versus Strict Arm Instruction Post Cardiac Device Surgery (LENIENT)” that aims to test the hypothesis that lenient arm restrictions are not inferior to strict ones following cardiac device surgery.

What about headphones and ATV’s? I have beats headphones and like to use them for walking. And we are going on a ATV excursion in the Bahamas. They said it’s not a rugged trail.
