My path to industrial automation job: Bachelors degree in language at a major university -> 10 months HVAC course in a trade school -> Immediately got hired by a building automation company. Worked for 2 years -> Hired by an industrial automation company. In building automation I grew hating regularly having to climb up ladder and pop ceiling tiles to work on VAV boxes, plus I did not like how the company managed me. Now I am so much happier in industrial automation!

Thanks for the vid, ex navy IT radiotelecoms, went to college for electrical engineering tech and decided to drop out and focus on PLCs since they had very limited information on it but it was a good introduction to it and gave me an idea of schematics, writing papers etc.

This video is extremely useful as I'm not only looking for some extra training but it's nice to know that the companies have their own certs for their software that I can take advantage of.

Got PLC engineer job without zero knowledge about PLC but with basic knowledge about 'automation'. One year already and I got familiar with a lot of things.
Man this job is so interesting.

This is an awesome video. I am a maintenance technician after getting a certificate in smart manufacturing and digital integration, and the company also wants me to learn how to set up networks for inker printers alongside repairing them. It's pretty cool and this will segway straight into some automation roles in the future if I want it to. I am learning everything I can while I'm at this company.

Here in Norway we have a vocational high school, same as trade school, and then after first year with electrical you can choose automation.I did this and i am now an automatician apprentice. When i am not travelling i am programming departments for a job we have which is all controls for the world largest trout on shore fish farming facility, with around 24 PLCs talking to each other, and over 700 vfd`s.
I also get to sit in the lead seat during commissioning.
Pretty fun to consider i am 19!

Considering I've been trying to get in entry level and having trouble, seeing this video exists at least makes me feel better that there isn't something wrong with me specifically.

I'm interested in learning the field, but I wouldn't want to spend more than $200 to purchase a PLC trainer. It is difficult getting over that little hump. Other than that, I have a degree in industrial technology and took automation classes with Allen Bradley PLCs. I thought of getting Automation Direct PLCs, but I don't know how useful that will be.

Hi Paul, I come from the IT field and I'm considering switching to the PLC programmer field. I took a class In PLC programming about 6, 7 years ago and liked it. I took it for fun while getting my bachelor's in IT. How hard would it be for someone like me to get an entirely-level job as a PLC programmer? do you recommend taking some online or face-to-face classes? Any advice would be much appreciated. Thank you for your time.

I’m a college grad with a history degree, I double majored in history and biology. I worked as a medical technician for a few years after college but after working in the medical field for so long I’m not really fond of it. I don’t want to waste more money going to get a masters or doctorate to work in a field that I don’t like. Right now I want to gain some more professional experience. My grandpa was a machinist and a role model in my life. He passed away last year on my birthday and was a admirable man, he was a very hard worker. He told me about PLC programming one time when I was struggling to find work. A local community college offers a certificate in PLC programming. It’s a struggle to find work as a college grad, do you think I can transition into this field with little experience? I took a few physics courses which talked about electricity and always found that very interesting. Thank you.

I'm 59 years old and have been in maintenance for many years. Now my plant is closing and every job for which I'm applying wants plc experience. What are some good resources to become familiar with basic programming?

I never did PLC before. But I have a quite good programming background in general even if my profession is not related to soft/hardware in any way. It took me one day to get into the ide and then I spend the last three days automate the process for vertical farmin. Today I got the job offer from that company. I guess the entry level is painting by numbers?

Great video. Any advice for someone with no programming experience, looking to get into the field? I'm a Mechanical technician and I'd like to step towards transitioning to a Controls Technician or PLC programmer, any advice?

I program PLCs at Mercedes Benz. It’s a sink or swim field. You either piss off production managers or please them.
