Another helpful thing to add to the checklist is an assessment if the old video you're thinking about updating is still getting impressions (compared to other videos released around the same time as that one). I actually ran through and did this with a bunch of videos, and while they don't exactly check off the box for meeting current production, I still am seeing an uptick. The one thing I'll add which wasn't really hit upon: for small channels, such a change is not likely to have an instant effect. For a couple that I updated, it took months for me to start to see them climb up in the 48 hour Realtime view. (Think of it like turning a ship around)

The problem I have with this technique though is where these views are coming from. For me, 80% of my views are from Search results so while it may look like a video was doing really well, in reality, that video with 200K views most of which being from search with a BAD Browse CTR, would not help if I applied this strat. :(

How to know when to update thumbnail

1. If video just as relevant today as when it was first uploaded
2. Was getting views at one point, but not as much now
3. Meets my current quality production standards
4. I have a clear idea on how to change title/thumbnail

Wow I noticed a lot of these videos that you talk about in my recommended but I just thought it was the youtube recommendation system recommending me a video I’ve already seen. I had no idea that it had to do with him changing his thumbnails

No doubt Mr Beast has mastered the algorithm and will always go viral …. but its a style thats replecable to go viral but not if your trying to make the best videos in terms of the art .. none are bad .. just different … but always something to learn 💯🔥
