As a welder the fact there’s flux there too makes me laugh

In the early days of welding, they used carbon rods to weld, but nowadays, they are used to erase welds

I had a soldering iron I bought from radio shack that had a forked graphite tip with a 9v battery. You had to bridge the tip to connect the circuit to heat up the tip element. It would get hot enough to solder. By it's nature, you had to feed solder into the joint and it works but stick to the tip. It was pretty convenient for small jobs.

I know you smirked hearing that.

You can see the bump popping up from the weld where the graphite magically transformed into metal as it melted

I've had Australian SCOPE soldering Irons for decades. They use a short carbon heating element behind the tap and are 'push to heat'. Running from a 2VAC transformer, they got to soldering temperature in just a few seconds. Perfect for Auto electrical work. Very difficult to find spares for.

The coolest soldering iron Ive ever seen worked like a butane lighter torch with a metal tip away from the flame

About 20 years ago radio shack sold a battery-powered soldering iron that was a split piece of graphite powered by 2 AA batteries. You had to bridge the two ends of the tip with the solder for power to flow, and it to heat.

Definitely wasn't bs, everyone knows graphite has build in Flux and turns into carbon Steen with a naked arc
