Greetings & Being Polite Part #1

In this video, we cover some different ways to say "hello" and "goodbye". Not just "hola" and "adíos". There are many other ways to say "hello" and "goodbye". Most Spanish courses and books don't teach the real ways, because they're often not real words or phrases.

I'm a native English speaker, but went to college to learn Spanish (studied some in Mexico) and now I teach Spanish. I watch the videos (and show them to my classes) because it is helpful to hear the language broken down with REAL LIFE examples from NATIVE speakers. Es mejor, porque a veces, mi acento no tiene sentido porque aprendi' la lengua de muchos profesores de diferentes paises (particularmente Argentina, Espana y Mexico). A veces, digo "yo me llamo" y otras veces digo "jo me jamo" jaja

Actually we say a lot 'Ta luego' like hasta luego but way shorter.

I'm a Spaniard and I want to "correct" what you've said about "buenas". It's not a short form to say Good Afternoon, it'd be like a synonym of Hello. You can say it at any time during the day.

The way I understood buenas tardes || buenas noches was to base it off when they usually have their meal time. Like 'buenas tardes', lunch until dinner, 'buenas noches' would be after dinner.

6:30 Es " 'ta luego ", no sólo luego :) Es una especie de abreviación de hasta. (El apostrofe ' significa en español que la palabra se ha hecho más corta)

Yes, we are indeed saying literally 'taluego' skiping 'has'. A few people will say 'staluego' at best, but 'taluego' is definitely real specially in Madrid.

Nobody uses "Luego" to say goodbye in spanish. You could say "Ta luego", which is an abbreviation of "Hasta luego". Besides, you can say "Buenas" at any time of day, actually it is another way to say hello in spanish.

In El Salvador se say "Buenas..." also, and it is used at any time of day or night.

Actually in Spain the "buen día" thing, which os short for "que tenga un buen dia" is quite formal, and rarely used out shops or hotels or any other service. You could use it when saying goodbye to an elder person maybe, but it would sound awkward in an informal situation, I would say "que vaya bien" instead :)
