Use (/ 9.0 2.0) then you can get 4.5 . The reason for this is because 9 and 2 both get interpreted as only integers. Saying 9.0 and 2.0 specifies the presence of fractions and gives the answer in fractional form.

If you want something a bit fancier than what you saw here, go to lispworks dott com They have versions for most platforms including windows.
As to the 9/4 example the issue is whether you go from integer to floating point or not. The one I mention will go to floating point
