The name "India" is originally derived from the name of the river Sindhu (Indus River) and has been in use in Greek since Herodotus (5th century BCE). The term appeared in Old English as early the 9th century and reemerged in Modern English in the 17th century.
The Republic of India has two principal short names, each of which is historically significant, "India" and "Bharata". A third name, "Hindustān", is sometimes an alternative name for the region comprising most of the modern Indian states

INDIA = LAND OF HINDUS. "IA" signifies a possessive. So it means "land of Hindus" or "that which is owned/possessed by Hindus." Hindu was named not by the Persians, but by the Avestan-Zoroastrians. Persians are a tribe of the original Avestans. Persian King Darius the Great, documents the word "Hindu" at Persepolis' Nakshe Rostam, as a tribe that is a member of his Persian Empire. Darius also calls himself a Kshatriya. Avestans and Vedic Hindus are sister religions.

It's sad to keep hearing that Bharat started only with Indus valley civilization, repeating European nonsense. The civilization in Southern parts of India existed even then. Sri Krishna lived ~5000 years ago and Sri Ram, around 10, 000 years ago. SriRam came down South and to Sri Lanka then. Civilization was existing there then. Indus valley is just 5000 years old. Just because excavations happened there doesn't mean that's the earliest history of Bharata.
