Josh Brolin Explains the Outer Range Season 2 Finale and What It All Means

Editor's Note: The following contains spoilers for Outer Range Season 2

Outer Range Season 1 was full of twists and turns and revelations that left the Abbott family shaken over two years ago. In that time, audiences have been left with questions surrounding the west pasture where the mysterious black hole has become a central focus. Now, all seven episodes of Season 2 are available to binge on Prime Video, which means we've got even more questions. In this interview with star and director Josh Brolin, Collider's Steve Weintraub has the opportunity to ask some of those burning questions including the ending of Season 2, if the ending sets up an alternate timeline, how the hole might branch timelines, and more.

At the end of Season 1, Brolin's character, Royal Abbott, the patriarch of the family, made a jaw-dropping confession that changed the already-mysterious series drastically. During their conversation, Brolin talks about the "chaotic recalibration" this admission puts Outer Range Season 2 through, and how the success of sci-fi epics like Dune: Part Two make it possible for the creators and new showrunner Charles Murray (The Devil You Know) to take this Yellowstone-esque story and turn it on its head. We find out just how much Brolin and Murray have mapped out in regard to Season 3, what exactly Wayne Tillerson (Will Patton) may know, and the ultimate fate of certain characters.

You can check out the full conversation in the video above or in the transcript below for more about Outer Range Season 2, Brolin's feature directorial debut, and what he has to say about Zach Cregger's (Barbarian) next horror, Weapons.

It was so great. I'm going to be furious if we don't get more of this show.

"Real good" is an understatement. It is an amazing show, and Josh Brolin absolutely makes it. I had forgotten so much of the detail of Season 1 that I had to go back and watch it again, which was a treat when you see the show start with the bison staring at you with two arrows in its side. Brilliant foreshadowing.

I live this show. I hope it gets a season 3 and I hope it doesn't take 2 years for it.

Season 2 was excellent. The acting, cinematography, directing, story, music, everything was perfect. The only thing that bummed me out was it was only 7 episodes. It ended too fast. I need a 20-episode season for this show because it's that good! 🙂

Love all eps of Outer Range. It's really 5* TV. The bison & bear scenes were stunning. We need more shows like this - well done to all. Fave episode so far, Ode To Joy.

Its funny just how cavalier all.of the characters are to jumping into a wormhole/time machine and their willingness to just accept it

They should’ve filmed season 2 and 3 back to back because now either they take 2 more years or they cancel it due to low viewer count since amazon only promotes “the boys”🤷‍♂️

Just finished watching S2, and regret Amazon waited so long to give the go ahead for a followup. It was a real brain twister to try to remember some important things that happened in S1. I really enjoyed the introduction of multiple versions of people and timelines, such as Joy's four years spent with the Shoshone. I hope there is a S3, but that it arrives much sooner than S2 did!

I felt a clarity arrive in season two that felt perfect and perfectly timed. Until I watched a couple of YouTube videos today I didn't realize the showrunners had changed. Royal's openness about his secret(s), while different from season 1, actually made sense in season 2. I watched other shows where the lead or leads keep secrets for WAYYYY too long, which start to weigh on the viewer's patience. I'm very much looking forward to season 3 (fingers crossed the ratings are good for season 2).

There are very few shows I've seen lately in which all the characters of an ensemble are given enough screen time to draw me into their respective story arcs. This is one of them.

Josh's voice is so calming, I love his voice, not with the interview audio, but when the audio is good.
