How to paint laminate kitchen cabinets

Laminated surfaces can be tricky to paint, but not with Chalk Paint® by Annie Sloan.

A laminate surface is one covered in plastic printed to look like wood. This technique would also work for melamine, a thin plastic covering over wood, often found on kitchen cabinets and other furniture.

Watch as Annie shows you how to paint a shiny, plastic surface with no priming or sanding.

Annie Sloan invented her revolutionary furniture paint, Chalk Paint®, in 1990 and hasn’t stopped refining and improving her formula since. There's no need for priming or sanding. Chalk Paint® is as easy to use as opening the tin, dipping your brush, and applying paint to furniture! Annie wanted to create one paint that could achieve several different techniques and finishes – from creating a textured chippy look to achieving a smooth modern finish, or even creating a wash. Annie's paint has minimal VOCs and is very easy to work with.

Thanks for this video, Annie! I get this question all the time and didn’t know how to answer it. I’ve only ever painted laminate with a primer. Now, I can share it just needs a sand before you start. Thank you!

Painted a wall with laminate on it years ago, I only cleaned it and sanded it, painted it and finished with lacquer as the dogs walk past the wall everyday. My favorite color Duck Egg . Still looks fab, to bad I can't post a picture here.

Any suggestion as to how I can paint laminate cabinets that have some cracks? I can't afford to replace them. Appreciate all you do!

Hi Annie! Would you suggest using your wax or lacquer on cabinets? I have kids pets and a husband who gets dirty at work 😅 if that makes any difference

Really helpful! What would you recommend if one wanted to paint a laminated counter top?

Thank you for this. However, having watched a few of your videos I never see you paint the edges. I just notice the drips. Also, if the edges are painted the paint will end up on the reverse side if not extremely careful. What is your recommendation for achieving a great reverse side?

Could you use a roller for the paint as well as the lacquer? Or is brush the best? The wardrobe cabinets I'm painting fir a client are fixed, can't be removed (made in the 1980s) so will have to paint vertically. Any suggestions will be gratefully 🙏 received. Nicky

How does this fair when next to an oven and therefore exposed to heat? Thank you

Hey, great video - would you ever recommend completely taking the laminate off and then painting the exposed MDF? I have seen some people go with that approach on other videos but seems quite time consuming if this approx works instead?

What advice do you have for degreasing / cleaning old doors before painting?

Hi - I am about to paint kitchen cabinets in my new apt. They were primed before arrived (not sure why). Should I sand down first or can I get right to it with the chalk paint? And, what kind of laquer do you suggest if I choose to use that instead of the wax? Thank you!!

I see a lot of rustic white washed looking decor, and wondering if a combo of distressed and rustic would become a good look.
